Abstract

ABSTRACT: Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is one of the world's most important food crops with great potential to be developed in Indonesia. This plant is rich in carotenoids and anthocyanins. Anthocyanin compounds in sweet potatoes function as components of healthy food. The purpose of this study was to identify the morphological diversity of sweet potato accessions, cultivation systems, and utilization of local communities in Wanggar District, Nabire Regency. The method used in this research is descriptive method with direct observation techniques in the field, at 3 villages: namely Wiraska, Wanggar Sari, and Karadiri in the Wanggar District, Nabire Regency. Data on sweet potato diversity were analyzed using cluster analysis with the NTSYS version 2.0 program. The result of this research are: (1) At the research sites in the villages of Wanggar Sari, Wiraska, and Karadiri there were 6 cultivars of sweet potato plants based on local names, namely: Unggu, Mokupudugu, Ueta, Mokupudugu, Nota, and Gelakue genotypes. These 6 cultivars had a diversity of morphological characters, (2) Based on the results of the cluster analysis, there are 2 main clusters that have the lowest similarity in morphological characters (34%), namely Cluster I (Unggu and Gelakue) and Cluster II (Makupudugu, Nota, Ueta, Kilumbi). The genotypes of Ungu and Gelakue in Cluster I have similar morphological characters of 43%, (3) Local communities in the Wanggar District still use traditional sweet potato cultivation systems and techniques that have been used from generation to generation, from land clearing to harvesting, and (4) In addition to being used as food, the plant parts of sweet potatoes are also used based on local wisdom communities as traditional medicines and natural fertilizers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Many cocoa trees in the farmer’s garden are old and unproductive or the trees are still at a productive age but the yield is not optimal due to poor quality of planting material. One way to overcome this problem is by grafting techniques, both top grafting and side grafting, using grafted materials from superior cocoa clones. This training was aimed to improve the technical skill and knowledge of the farmers in the cocoa grafting techniques with the ultimate objectives are to improve cocoa yield and quality. The training activity was held on July 18, 2023 at the Oransbari Plantation Seed and Plant Protection Center, Oransbari, West Papua. The training was attended by 19 cocoa farmers. This activity was conducted using the lecture method in the class room and the direct practice in the Balai's cocoa garden. The results of training activities showed the high enthusiasm of farmers in participating this training. The farmers are motivated to continue and improve in managing their cocoa farms. In addition to this training, farmers also discussed about the cocoa pod borer (CPB) pests that damaged and reduced their cocoa bean yields. The suggestion for solving this pest problem is by applying the mechanical control. Mechanical CPF control techniques had been well explained to the farmer participants and are expected to be implemented by the farmers simultaneously so that CPB pests are no longer haunting cocoa farmers in Oransbari. Abstract

ABSTRACT  PT Freeport Indonesia has committed to restore tailings into fertile land through the reclamation and revegetation program. One of the revegetation activities is the cultivation of vegetable plants. In its implementation, field human resources are needed to be trained into capable field working people in vegetable cultivation. Thus, this training aims to provide guidance, and practice for field workers of PTFI Environmental Department Reclamation Division  in cultivating vegetable plants in the MP 21 Timika tailings land. The activity was carried out in June 2023. The method of this training was in the form of technical guidance given practically in the form of a plot demonstration in the field, which was preceded by a lecture. The activity was well attended by all participants. This activity consisted of land preparation, fertilization, seedling, sowing, and transferring the plants into the field. The result of the extension activity showed that the field workers who were trained became more skillful in cultivating vegetable plants, and also indicated by good growth of eggplant, tomato and chili.  Keywords: Cultivation; Revegetation; Tailings; Vegetables   ABSTRAK PT Freeport Indonesia telah berkomitmen untuk memberdayakan lahan tailing melalui kegiatan reklamasi dan revegetasi, diantaranya menjadi lahan budidaya.
