Abstract

Nowadays, natural resources in Indonesia have been decreased because of the rapid increase in development and human population. It is most likely that marine resources will become a primary source in supporting our economics in the future.                  Marine and coastal zones seem to become areas of our main priority for industrial, agrobusiness, agroindustrial, settlement, tourism, transportation and harbour developmen. However, these areas are still having various problems or cases which couId cause their unoptimum development and managements. The decrease of seawater quality standard caused by high suspended polluted by solid and Iiquid waste, sea water intrusions, abrations and accretions, shoalings, floods, and dryness are some of  the various cases which can be found in the marine and coastaI zones. Another case which is not less important is human behaviour who have destructed mangroves and changed the function of swampy forest to become fishpond areas. The survey in the marine and coastaI areas, especially in the eastern coast of the Cirebon regency, aims to obtain data, in which these cases are potentially found by applying the coastal characteristic observation and remote sensing methods.

Abstract

The marine geological and geophysical researches using a single channel seismic method in surrounding Turban water have been supported by echo sounder and marine sediment sampling activities. The single channel seismic record of 300 2 km has been made and it covers the area of about 1500 km . Those seismic profiling is perpendicular to the north coast of East Java with north - south direction and the cross line with east - west direction. The records are supposed to have a clear geological structure. Correlation of the geological structure based on the interpretation of seismic profiling of the sequence IV showed a similar east - west direction with the geological sequences of Rembang Basin. The sequence of sedimentary rocks of the Rembang Basin has been folded and faulted continuously from the land to the sea floor of the Java Sea. Keywords : seismic, echo sounder, geological structure, sequence, Rembang

Abstract

Indonesia has thousands of islands in various tectonic settings and, in consequence, it has an immense variety of submarine slopes. Due to the ongoing orogenic processes, Cenozoic basins have emerged, and their evolution can be studied in more detail. Giant slide masses entirely made up of an incoherent association of broken, folded, and crumpled strata occuring along the transect to Kananggar. The best exposed example is located ENE of Kananggar. It follows on top and laterally from a succession of about 100 meter of very thick-bedded, stacked debris, flow-turbidite channels. The slide could be observed 2 in an area of some 10 km . The observed thickness is in order of 120 m and the mass is directly overlain by a normal stratified pelite-turbidite succession. Keywords: slope, basin, sea floor, slide, Kananggar
