Abstract

This article examines the interpretation of religious teachings in the daily routine of the people of Langsa, Aceh. Langsa is an area that applies Islamic law like Aceh in general. The Langsa religious culture is not different from other Aceh regions. It's just that Langsa, more displays the cosmopolitan region with various ethnicities and religions that have mingled together. In sociology, Langsa displays the criteria for a bureaucratic and semi-industrial middle city. in such conditions, it is interesting to see the interpretation of religion in the Langsa community to see the influence of bureaucratic and semi-industrial modern life. The study was conducted with a phenomenological method with additional data in the form of interviews with 2 informants. The results of the study indicate that the interpretation of religion in Langsa takes various forms. This is because of the difference in the experience of community interaction with social conditions which gives rise to a variety of interpretations. In general, the interpretation of religion in Langsa still shows the condition of the formality where religion as a demand in humans interacts with God, not with humans.

Abstract

This article examines the experience of Acehnese female victims of sexual violence seeking justice through Qanun Jinayat (Islamic criminal bylaw) in Aceh, Indonesia. The empirical data in this study were collected through in-depth interviews with the victims and families related to the cases of sexual violence. By employing the narrative agency, this article argues that telling the experience of seeking justice is a way female victims of sexual violence express their resistance to the implementation of Qanun Jinayat in Aceh. Regarding this, we will show that Aceh’s Qanun Jinayat, which was originally implemented to eradicate sexual violence, turns out to have limitations in realizing the desired goals. This finding ultimately confirms that the concept of legal pluralism adopted in Aceh, Indonesia, has liminality in facilitating justice for women and other marginalized communities.

Abstract

This article discusses the negotiation between Islam and Indigenous rite among the fishermen community in Kuala Langsa, Aceh, in managing marine resources and the social life of fishermen. Employing the theory of Dahrendorf, the author analyzed the conflict in fishermen community from the perspective of social class analysis. The data were collected through in-depth interview and observation of daily behavior of fishermen communities from March to May 2015. The author showed that the conflict in fishermen community of Kuala Langsa were mostly caused due to the limitation of struggle for the area and means of production. For example, the conflict between those fishermen who use Pukat Langgar (traditional fishing tecnic) and those who employ Pukat Harimau (trawl) and also the resistance over indigenous regulations. Nevertheless, by using religion as a means that is associated with local custom and tradition, this paper found that Islamized indigenous tradition of Panglima Laot has become the strategic social element that is able to construe the seeds of conflict and opaque among the fishermen community of Kuala Langsa.
