Abstract

This artical is motivateid by Phone Transcriptions or Google Translate Sound in mproving Students’ Pronountions: Students’ Perceptions. Therefore, to improve students’ pronunciation skills, the teacher suggests to students use Phone Transcriptions or Google Translate Sound as media to learn pronunciation independently. The aim of this research is to describe the students’ perceptions of using Phone Transcriptions or Google Translate Sound and to describe the obstacles do students find using Phone Transcriptions or Google Translate Sound as media in learning pronunciation. This research used qualitative method in specific descriptive qualitative methods. The participant of this research were 36 students of English Department. They are students from TBI1 in state Islamic University of North Sumatra. The result of this research shows the students’ perception on using Phone Transcriptions or Google Translate Sound as media in learning pronunciation was positive, because students can learn practically and independently.

Abstract

This study aims to inform that an understanding of phonetic symbols is needed to assist in pronouncing. This study uses library research, this study uses student observation by giving students a few words or sentences and then students read it. The result, students of the Department of English at Negeri Padang University in 2015 were said to have good skills in pronouncing the vowels of English words. The average is 66.1. There are 9 excellent students here.

Abstract

Phonology is an important part of sound or sound in language pronunciation, including in English, because inaccurate pronunciation will result in a misunderstanding in communication. The difficulty faced by students lies in the pronunciation of sounds. As for the research method, the researcher used a type/research approach in the form of Library Research. Literature study is used to collect information and data with the help of various materials in the library such as documents, books, magazines, and historical stories.

Abstract

The Minimal Pairs technique is a technique for investigating the existence of phonemes (language sounds that can distinguish meaning) by comparing two or more forms of speech sounds in the same environment. The minimal pairs technique is used to practice pronunciation skills, especially on similar word sounds and makes it easier for us to distinguish phoneme sounds in English. This study aims to determine student perceptions of the use of minimal pairs technique in class. This research is qualitative research using questionnaires and interviews that ask students' perceptions about the use of minimal pairs technique in class. The results of this study indicate that most students have positive perceptions of using the minimal pairs technique in improving their pronunciation skills. Then they argue that their pronunciation skills improve after using the minimal pairs technique. So that this technique can be suggested as a learning method that will be applied in class learning to improve students' pronunciation skills.

Abstract

Frasa merupakan unsur penting dalam memahami struktur kalimat dan pembentukan makna secara gramatikal. Keberadaan frasa tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai satuan kebahasaan formal, tetapi juga berperan dalam mengorganisasi informasi, memperjelas hubungan antarkata, serta mendukung kejelasan dan koherensi wacana, khususnya dalam konteks penulisan akademik. Pemahaman yang memadai terhadap frasa memungkinkan pembelajar dan peneliti bahasa untuk menganalisis struktur kalimat secara lebih sistematis dan komprehensif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji konsep frasa dengan menitikberatkan pada definisi, jenis-jenis frasa, fungsi frasa dalam kalimat, serta perspektif teoretis yang digunakan dalam kajian sintaksis. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah studi pustaka dengan menelaah buku-buku linguistik, artikel jurnal ilmiah, dan sumber akademik yang relevan dengan pembahasan frasa dan tata bahasa. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa frasa merupakan unsur fundamental dalam pembentukan struktur kalimat dan memiliki peran yang saling berkaitan dalam menyampaikan makna secara efektif. Berbagai pendekatan teoretis memberikan sudut pandang yang berbeda namun saling melengkapi dalam menjelaskan struktur dan fungsi frasa. Dengan demikian, pemahaman frasa secara teoritis dan fungsional menjadi landasan penting dalam meningkatkan kompetensi kebahasaan, terutama dalam analisis sintaksis dan penulisan akademik.

Abstract

This literature review provides a comprehensive examination of English vowels, their definition, pedagogical approaches for teaching them, and the benefits of learning them. The analysis explores that there are front vowel, central vowel, and back vowel. This research identifies the effectiveness of explicit instruction, auditory training, and visual aids in improving learners' pronunciation and perception of English vowels. Understanding and mastering English vowels contribute to enhanced pronunciation, listening skills, speaking fluency, reading ability, and overall language acquisition. Furthermore, learning English vowels promotes cultural integration and facilitates cross-cultural communication. The findings from this review offer valuable insights for language educators in designing effective instructional strategies for teaching English vowels and empowering learners to excel in English-speaking environments.

Abstract

This research focuses on the study of English consonants. This research used literature review method to explore the English consonant such as the manner of articulation, the organs produced the consonant, and the benefit of learning English consonant. The results are, the first section explores the specific anatomical structures and organs within the vocal tract that play a role in producing consonant sounds. The second section examines the different ways in which airflow is obstructed or modified during consonant production, highlighting categories such as plosives, fricatives, affricates, nasals, and approximants. The third section investigates the various factors that influence consonant pronunciation, including phonetic, phonological, sociolinguistic, and individual factors, as well as the impact of language contact and second language acquisition. The final section discusses the advantages of learning English consonants, such as improved communication skills, enhanced listening comprehension, expanded vocabulary acquisition, and increased oral fluency. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the study of English consonants, offering a comprehensive understanding of their production, variations, and implications for language instruction and speech pathology.

Abstract

This study aims to provide insights into the specific difficulties encountered by Indonesian learners. This study used literature review to explore the phonological challenges and error patterns faced by Indonesian learners in English consonant production. The findings reveal that Indonesian learners often make substitution errors, replacing English consonants with sounds from their native language that are more familiar to them. Additionally, voicing errors, difficulties with consonant clusters, struggles with fricative consonants, and challenges related to stress and rhythm patterns are identified as common issues. These errors and difficulties are influenced by the phonetic patterns and structures of the Indonesian language.

Abstract

The research aims to find out the effectiveness of Google Translate in pronouncing English words and providing the Phonetic Transcription from university students’ perspective. This is qualitative research that uses questionnaires directed to the students and observation by the researchers to collect the result. It turns out that Google Translate provides accurate pronunciation after being compared to other translation tools, but it’s not provide the Phonetic Transcription which students’ know so.
