Abstract

Bridging background knowledge and present issues or demand, as well as preparing students for facing the future need to have pivotal positions during the teaching and learning process.  Particularly in the context of teaching students who are working while pursuing higher study, the process of teaching and learning English for professional classes has its challenges both for teachers and students.  EFL classrooms, then, should be able to bring contextual meaning through suitable materials, activities, and assessments. This present study is a retrospective study that elaborates on how an online professional English training class in STT STIKMA Malang was conducted based on the students’ work to match the students’ needs. It was found out that the use of work-based materials blended with the current issues is found to be effective to promote the students’ critical thinking during the teaching and learning process. The work-based activities assessments are also able to increase students’ online participation throughout the process of the language classroom. Furthermore, from the study, it was also found that students also give positive responses due they can link the English language learned in the class with the specific work that the students have.

Abstract

Need analysis is a pivotal process prior to starting any courses in order to get initial classroom mapping about students’ needs and expectations. This current study aims to describe the result of need analysis conducted prior to the course of Bahasa Inggris for nursing students. The method employed is descriptive quantitative using data that were collected through questionnaires distributed to the students who are taking Bahasa Inggris course in the odd semester 2022/2023. The results show several points, such as the students belonged to the beginner to intermediate level of English users who merely used English in the classroom contexts. The most challenging language skill is speaking, yet they have had learning awareness to acquire all the language skills in the targeted language. The students also propose some criteria of good teaching materials, learning activities, as well as assessment forms. Finally, the result of this current study can be one of the considerations or the basis for future learning designers, course facilitators, and institutions to design the course which meets the students’ needs.

Abstract

This community service program is aimed to strengthen the capacity of youth members of Forum Pemuda Pelopor (FPP) Situbondo in English proficiency and cultural literacy, as well as to foster creativity through the development of contemporary batik motifs based on the local wisdom of the Tapal Kuda region. The program was based on the result of need analysis revealed that > 65% of FPP members had difficulties in all aspects of English skills, and >60% had limited knowledge of local culture. To address these issues, a series of 10 training sessions were conducted combining synchronous and asynchronous English learning, self-access language learning, and hands-on cultural activities. Results indicate a significant improvement: 89% of participants reported have better English and cultural literacy skills. The program highlights the relevance of integrating language learning with local culture and creative hands-on activities, while also providing a replicable model for sustainable youth empowerment.
