Abstract

This article provides a perspective on how children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) in Indonesia are identified and supported in the classrooms. A narrative review of the extant peer-reviewed articles was adopted as the research method. Informed by the SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles) protocol,  6 databases were searched, 214 articles published between 2011 - 2022 were identified, and 6 articles published between 2018 - 2022 were selected for analysis. The findings show that the identification of children with SLCN relied on general teacher observations instead of formal measurements. Children with SLCN were mostly supported by teachers through strategies such as modelling correct speech sounds, singing and storytelling. Researchers described SLCN using the terms ‘speech’ and ‘language’ without differentiation. There remains a scarcity of research about SLCN in Indonesia. This narrative review aims to provide recommendations for the future of SLCN research in Indonesia

Abstract

A growing shift in parental preference from kindergarten to Bimba has emerged in Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Indonesia. This research aimed to explore parental perceptions in choosing Bimba as the sole ECE for their children. A qualitative case study was conducted with six participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, in which participants also presented audio-visual materials about children’s learning activities. Data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: parental concern, image of kindergarten in parents’ eyes, strengths of bimba, and financial consideration. These findings suggest that parental decisions are shaped by both immediate practical needs and systemic educational expectations. The study highlights the importance of strengthening public understanding of the goals and role of ECE in Indonesia.

Abstract

Fairness in educational assessment is a fundamental principle shaping the quality of teacher-student relationships and the meaningfulness of the learning process. A preliminary study conducted in several secondary schools in Jakarta, Semarang, and Banjarbaru found that some teachers still base their assessment practices on personal experience and institutional pressure, without a clear conceptual grounding in fairness. This study aims to explore in depth how secondary school teachers interpret and practice fairness in educational assessment. The study employed a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with five teachers from junior high, senior high, and vocational school levels in public schools. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis, encompassing familiarization with the data, generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the report. The findings reveal six major themes: teacher identity, emotion, and professional development; teacher-student relationships and classroom management; assessment systems and learning evaluation; curriculum and education policy; inclusive education and student diversity; and professional collaboration and learning innovation. The findings indicate that teachers' perceptions of fairness are neither singular nor static, but are dynamically constructed through the interaction of emotional experience, interpersonal relationships with students, curriculum policy demands, and the need to accommodate students with special needs. Teachers conceive of fairness not as uniform treatment, but as the adjustment of assessment to each student's condition, effort, and character. This study contributes to the development of a contextual fairness model for assessment that reflects the realities of education in Indonesia and provides a basis for designing teacher professional development programs related to fair assessment literacy.
