Abstract

Many studies have shown that land use changes in watersheds such as forests that convert to settlements, industrial and estates, have an impact on flooding. So it is important to know the correlation between the various land use changes to the discharge within a watershed. This study is a preliminary study in an attempt to assess the correlation between land cover index and peak discharge, with case studies in the Beringin River Basin. The peak discharge with the return period of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 years are computed with HEC-HMS software, developed by Hydrologic Engineering Centre (HEC) and US Army Corps of Engineers which computes the runoff discharge from the precipitation. As for land covered index (LCI), it is defined as the sum of the land-use index (LUI). The result of the case study shows the strong correlation between the land covered index with the the runoff discharge with such relation : Q100 = -22.42LCI2 + 214.30LCI - 10.62, Q50 = -18.33LCI2 + 181.87LCI - 20.19, Q20 = -14.30LCI2 + 145.27LCI - 15.61, Q10 = -11.36LCI2 + 118.41LCI - 12.29, Q5 = -8.42LCI2 + 91.27LCI - 8.9 and Q2 = -4.44LCI2 + 53.54LCI - 4.5.

Abstract

The land use change in a watershed cause erosion resulting in sedimentation in river channels. Physically treatment of sedimentation requires a considerable cost, hence it is necessary to find another alternative treatment, i.e. by utilizing river sediment for building materials. Brick is a building material that is widely produced and used by the society. To provide solutions for sediment reduction, it is necessary to do a research on the utilization of river sediment for brick raw materials. In this study, the utilization of sediment into bricks was proposed in the form of Unfired Bricks. Raw sediment material will be mixed with cement and sand with a certain composition to increase the compression strength of brick in order to meet one of the SNI requirements, i.e. 15-2094-2000 or SNI 03-0349-1989. Results found that the addition of cement and sand treatment can increase the compressive strength of the brick up to 44,176 kg/cm² at the age of 14 days. However, the compression strength test results are still below the compression strength of Red Brick requirements in accordance with SNI 15-2094-2000 where the minimum compression strength of brick is 50 kg /cm², but it qualify for the compression Strength Concrete Brick SNI 03-0349-1989 for the quality level of grade III with a minimum of 40 kg / cm² and grade IV with a minimum of 25 kg / cm²

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Limbangan Village is located at the Wanareja District, Cilacap Regency, Central Java. It is one of the areas prone to flash floods. Based on data, flash floods were recorded on 27 October 2021 which were caused by the overflow of the Cigeugeumeuh River and resulted in hundreds of houses and markets being damaged. Therefore, to reduce losses due to disasters that occur, especially flash floods in Limbangan Village, mitigation efforts are carried out in the form of socialization of community-based management of flash floods. Efforts to carry out community-based flood management in Cilacap Regency, were carried out through collaboration between the Public Works Polytechnic and Limbangan Village. The socialization of flood management in Limbangan Village uses concept of participatory rural community social approach or Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). At the end, community service activities in Cilacap Regency by the Public Works Polytechnic, Semarang have been successfully held. The results achieved in the implementation of this community service are the provision of information on rainfall that has the potential to cause flash floods, the learning process of disaster mitigation as a preparedness measure for flash floods, flood-prone and evacuation maps, and communication tools as a continuation of the community service program.
