Abstract

Natural fibers are a very prospective commodity to be developed. One of them is jute fiber (Corchorus capsularis), a natural fiber derived from the jute plant from the stem of the plant. Jute trees are perennial plants that grow well in alluvial soils, which are dry, slightly sandy soils in humid tropical climates, one of which is Indonesia. Most of the utilization of jute fiber in Indonesia is only limited as a basic material for making sacks and rug coatings. This research was conducted with the aim of insight into creative creation that has the potential to develop and utilize jute fiber as the main material in the creation of works of art in the form of decorative mirror products by taking the motif structure and adaptation of the macramé technique. The research method uses the concept of practice-based research as a research that begins with research related to preliminary studies of objects and practices, recording and collecting data that are considered important in the creation process. Through exploration, research and practice, jute fiber can produce a product in the form of an ornamental mirror by applying the makramé technique and utilizing natural dyes.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the concept of plastic waste and other forms of waste—such as fashion waste and medical waste—as the foundation for creating mixed-media fine art. The method employs a pragmatic artistic interest approach with a semi-figurative style, using zinc as the primary medium alongside painting techniques like plakate, impasto, pointillism, and brushstrokes. The creative process began by collecting used medical plastic waste, including infusion bottles, oxygen masks, NGT tubes, and medicine packaging, which were then collaged and integrated into a two-dimensional artwork. The result is a mixed-media fine art piece that holds not only aesthetic value but also conveys a powerful environmental message about ocean pollution caused by plastic waste.

Abstract

The creative industry of recycled crafts is growing and innovating as an effort to reduce environmental pollution. One of the creative industries in this field is Salam Rancage. Salam Rancage processes newspaper waste into products of economic value. However, this creative industry faces various challenges, such as market competition and the availability of raw materials. The challenges affects business sustainability and hinder the production process. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the strategies of Salam Rancage in maintaining its existence based on Michael A. Porter's Competitive Strategy theory and the existence of handicrafts produced based on Martono's Craft Aesthetics theory. The research method used is a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that Salam Rancage has implemented all aspects of Competitive Strategy as follows: (1) Cost Leadership is achieved by utilizing environmentally friendly raw materials sourced from waste banks, (2) Differentiation is achieved by differentiating the materials used in product creation, (3) Innovation is carried out through regular exhibitions and market research, (4) Growth is achieved by organizing sewing and cloth mask-making training to maintain its presence in society, and (5) Alliance is formed through collaborations with the government and the women weavers. Based on the Craft Aesthetics theory analysis, Salam Rancage has applied form follows function, creative coloring, contextual function, and economic efficiency. However, Salam Rancage has not yet applied ornamental aspects to the handicrafts produced.
