Abstract

Child-marriage is easily found in most area in Indonesia and is second highest in ASEAN countries after Cambodia. Complexity of child-marriage roots in cultural tradition triggered by religious interpretation. However such facts being worsen as affected by regulations that legalized child-marriage. The soaring of child-marriage provides picture of the weakness of women and young girls in the family and society within dominance patriarchy ideology. Considering such ideology, gender inequality causes women and young girls having minimum access and bargaining position in the decision-making process. When this happens the rights of young girls are difficult to fulfill as can be seen in the fact of high-reaching child-marriage. In Kabupaten Sumenep, East Java, for example, under-age marriage reached 42,5% in 2015. Such complexity needs simultaneous and comprehensive efforts from national level to the desa (village) level which involving related stakesholder in the society. In this paper, I will develop opportunities and strategic measures in counteract child-marriage through the integratization of regulation such as Undangundang no. 6/2014 on the Desa as an entrance to build gender equality, women empowerment and child-protection to campaign against child-marriage.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the phenomenon of kodokushi (lonely death) among the elderly in Japan’s hyper-aging society as a negative impact of modernity. The research is analyzed through Anthony Giddens’ juggernaut of modernity perspective. The juggernaut is a walking machine (giant panzer) with extraordinary power, which we can steer to a certain extent but is also likely to lose control and tear itself to pieces. The results show that the phenomenon of lonely death (kodokushi) in the elderly reflects the uncontrollable juggernaut of modernity. Changes in family structure, the decline in birth rates, and cultural values that Japanese people hold cause kodokushi to remain high in Japan, especially among the elderly. Elderly people who live alone without traditional family or community ties live in social isolation. In the context of Giddens' Juggernaut of Modernity, the juggernaut has lost control. The phenomenon of kodokushi reflects complex challenges. Many older people experience isolation and loneliness due to a lack of strong social ties. Culturally, the ingrained culture of not wanting to inconvenience others (meiwaku wo kakutakunai) in Japanese society is a barrier to overcoming kodokushi. Addressing this phenomenon requires holistic efforts from the government, social institutions, and society. Although efforts to overcome kodokushi have been made, understanding and dealing with these complexities is crucial in Japan's hyper-aging society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze more deeply the collective memory of Bugis weaver community in Pagatan through the form of creating weavers’ works that are not only a residue of the past, but also as a representation of the memories collected for their sustainable cultural identity. This research is based on Bugis community in Pagatan as an illustration of diaspora community that continues to carry out its traditions from their ancestors. This research uses qualitative methods, namely observation, in-depth interviews, and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). The purposive technique is carried out to identify informants that have been determined based on the research objectives. This study was analyzed using Maurice Halbwachs’ collective memory theory which said that collective memory embedded in the collective mind of the community forms the story of the past as part of the social identity of the community. This research finds that the systematic sequence of the past is like a collection of threads that are intertwined at a certain time, woven into one and cannot be separated from the present point of view. This research concludes that weavers are also able to manage its collective memory by expressing it through forms of Pagatan Weaving motifs as a strategy to survive its identity.
