Abstract

African Swine Fever (ASF) is an infectious disease in pigs caused by a double-stranded DNA virus from the Asfarviridae family. This disease is generally characterized by bleeding in the ears, back and legs. This virus causes death and has a large economic impact, however ASF is not a zoonotic disease so it does not have an impact on human health. The results of necropsy in dead pigs showed abnormalities in the organs such as erythrema of the skin, swollen and hyperemic pulmonary edema, the spleen turned black, the liver was swollen, there was fluid in the pericardium and ptechie or haemorrhages were often found in the heart, kidneys. Control and prevention for ASF until now there is no effective treatment and vaccine. Control and prevention efforts are to eradicate pigs infected by the ASF virus and control biosafety and biosecurity as the most effective measures to prevent and control ASF virus. African swine fever has no pathognomonic symptoms, so that the clinical symptoms are similar to other hemorrhagic diseases such as Classical Swine Fever, salmonellosis or erysipelas so it is necessary to carry out pathological anatomical examinations. Changes in anatomical pathology ASF disease macroscopically.

Abstract

Cattle are one of the contributing livestocks to human needs of animal protein. Crystalluria is urogenital disease characterized by the presence of crsytals in the urine. Crystals can chronically combine and enlarge to form urolith which can reduce productive and reproductive performance of cattle. Urine crystals consist of several types and have different structure based on the constituent substance. Crystalluria formation is also influenced by various factors. This study aimed to determine types and characteristics of crystalluria, risk factors, in vitro factors that can induce crystallization and treatment of crystalluria in cattle. This research used literature study approach. Data were collected based on its relation to the research objectives and then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that silica, struvite, calcium carbonate, and calcium oxalate are the most common types of urolith found in cattle. Crystalluria was differentiated by its morphology, solubility, and color. The incidence of crystalluria was caused by various factors, namely supersaturated urine, diet, urine pH, sex, geographic condition, urease-producing bacterias infection, drugs and crystallization inhibitors. General treatment strategies of crystalluria include provide ad libitum drinking and NaCl salt to increase water intake and urine volume, and specific strategies include dietery restriction of crystallogenic substances and adding acidifier and alkalinizer to diet to modify urine pH. Crystalluria treatment was spesifically based on the type of crystalluria found. Therefore, it was necessary to identify crystalluria to determine the treatment to be given. In vitro factors include storage time, evaporation, storage temperature, urease-producing bacteria contamination can induce crystallization, a falsely positive result.

Abstract

Castration or orchiectomy is a surgical procedure performed on the testes, in the form of taking or cutting the testicles from the body. The purpose of this study was to determine the minimum age, castration technique and the advantages and disadvantages of castration in pigs. This literature study was obtained from searching and collecting various sources from Google Scholar by using the Mendeley application. Based on the results of the study, castration in pigs is more effective in cattle aged between 3-6 weeks of age because it affects growth, food conversion coefficient and carcass quality, and also metabolic and growth rate. The purpose of carrying out castration on pigs is to prevent unpleasant odors and tastes, support efforts to fatten male animals, produce high quality meat and reduce aggressive levels in male pigs. Castration techniques that can be used in pigs are open castration and immunocastration. The most common castration technique for pigs is the open castration technique or surgical castration technique. There is a new castration technique called immunocastration, which is a castration technique that involves injecting protein chemical compounds to induce the production of antibodies to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). However, in this technique none of the chemical products used are licensed in the European Union and the consequences (consumer safety and animal welfare) have not been fully evaluated.
