Abstract

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)is one of the phenomena that affect rainfall. This study aims to determine the effect of ENSO on rainfall in Manokwari Selatan. Boxplot analysis and total rainfall were used to determine the impact of ENSO. In general, the effect of ENSO on the seasonal period in South Manokwari occurs over a certain period. Like the La Nina influence which has a significant impact on the JJA and SON periods. The impact that occurs is an increase in the intensity of rainfall from the average in normal conditions. The increase occurred at Warsui, Oransbari, Gayabaru, and Ransiki rainfall posts. Meanwhile, the effect of El Nino also occurred but only during the JJA period. During this period, total rainfall decreased by 75% (Warsui), 54% (Oransbari), and 64% (Ransiki). There is also the effect of ENSO in terms of an annual period. The effect of ENSO in the annual period is only seen to have an impact on areas that have a equatorial type of rainfall pattern, namely the Warsui and Ransiki rainfall posts. Both rainfall posts can experience an average increase and the total annual rainfall ranges from 2% to 237% in La Nina conditions. On the other hand, in El Nino conditions, there is a decrease in the average and total rainfall of up to 37%.
