Passive sentences are often used in Indonesian sentences. The use of Indonesian passive sentences is considered more polite and more refined. Passive sentences are related to politeness in language. The more you understand about the passive voice, the more polite the sentences will be. Etymologically or the origin of the word, syntax comes from two Greek words, namely sun which means "with" and tattein which means "to place". Judging from the two words, etymologically, syntax means placing words into groups of words, phrases or sentences. An essay is the result of a person's series of activities in expressing his ideas or thoughts through written language that can be read by others. There are several types of essays, namely scientific essays, semi- scientific essays, descriptive essays, expositional essays, and narrative essays. The purpose of writing this research is to describe the level of use of passive sentences in Indonesian in an essay by 5th grade elementary school students. This research is related to writing a narrative essay. Writing is one of the four aspects of language skills. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The research data is in the form of student essays and the source of research data is essays from elementary students and the object of this research is the use of passive sentences. The results of the research on the form of passive sentences in students' essays contained passive sentences with the prefix di- and the prefix ter-, namely accompanied and paid off. In the essays by elementary school students, the researcher concluded that the most dominant type of passive sentence used was the prefix di-.
