Abstract

It is surprising to read that a character's spiritual journey to the position of human begins with casual sex. It reads on Lontaraq Séhu Maradang (The Story of Sheikh Mardan), a classic literary work in Makassarese that can be classified as biblical or Islamic literature. This script contains the story of a hero's spiritual wanderings named Sheikh Mardan or Indra Jaya, who is permanently colored by making love with women and written in the prose style of the spoken language of a narrator. This story is important to discuss because it is used as a moral teaching but contains deviant behavior. Does this research answer why there is a narrative of free sex in the text of Pau-paunna Raja Séhu Maradang? This research data is taken from The Story of Sheikh Mardan, transliterated and translated by Aburaerah Aief, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Indonesian and Regional Literature Book Publishing Project 1981. The data collection method used is a reading and recording technique, then selected and sorted relevant data, then analyzed and concluded. This study is a type of qualitative-narrative research with an Islamic science approach. The conclusions of this study are: When this work is placed essentially as a literary work, the meaning of free sex that colors the character's spiritual journey must be interpreted with an implied meaning because the character's religious science is gradually heading towards perfection. The four women courted by Sheikh Mardan began with no marriage to the first two women, then steadily married fiqh to the third woman, and inner marriage plus fiqh marriage to the fourth woman. Sex with a recreative function must be interpreted as the pleasure of the world that must be controlled and restored to its purity as a means of offspring.

Abstract

Pau-Pau Rikadonna I Daramatasia (PRID) is a very popular story and has an important position in the lives of Bugis people in South Sulawesi as well as in other region. In the script form, the story has three versions: Bone, Barru, and Pangkep. Not only being written in script form, the story is also staged in short films, picture stories, dances, and others. This article aims to understand the meaning for the Bugis' collective awareness of PRID stories. To reveal the meaning, Bone version of PRID will be used with considering the whole story. Bone's PRID is also unique because it has some additions of episodes at the beginning and at the end of the story that become the focus of this article analysis. In understanding the meaning contained in the PRID, Levi Strauss's theory of structuralism will be used by building binary opposition to the depth structure of the text. Based on the analysis conducted, the addition of episodes contained in the PRID version of Bone is closely related to the cultural value of siriq na pesse (honor and solidarity) which is opposing sharia values. This can be interpreted as an effort by the Bugis to reconcile the two values so that PRID is well thanked and appreciated until now as can be seen in Youtube contents.

Abstract

This study reveals how lyrics and visuals are interconnected in shaping meaning. This study aims to analyze the music video for the song “Hena” popularized by Humood Alkhudher and Mehdi Mozayine using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative analysis by applying four main concepts of Saussurean semiotics, namely signifier–signified, langue–parole, synchronic–diachronic, and syntagmatic–paradigmatic, which are examined through differential relations. The result of this study indicates that the music video for the song “Hena” constructs meaning through the integration of signifiers between lyrics and visuals that mutually reinforce the signified. The meaning conveyed is not singular but dynamic, emerging from the interplay between childhood memories, friendship, familial affection, and hopes for the future. This music video also represents Arab cultural values as a language, yet presents them through personal and emotional expressions as a parable that resonates with the universal experiences of its audience. While affirming synchronic meaning in a contemporary context, it also incorporates diachronic elements that depict the passage of time from childhood to adulthood as part of the process of emotional identity formation. The conclusion of this study indicates that the meaning of “Hena” is constructed through the dynamic relationship between lyrics and visuals, in which both reinforce, negotiate, and contrast the message. Thus, Saussurean semiotics opens a new perspective on the construction of meaning in contemporary popular music.

Abstract

The current paper is dedicated to examining the traditional and Islamic dowry (sompa plus panai and mahr) in modern Bugis society. Nowadays, it is interesting to discuss the dowry as perceived by modern Bugis society as an expensive obligation. It is also relevant to investigate the dowry and how it is negotiated in Bugis society. For the researchers to find the answers, reading the classical Islamic text of Pau-Paunna Sitti Rabiyatul Awaliya was applied in the research as well as observing the Bugis society. Finally, the researchers found that the dowry (Sompa) in Bugis tradition has been regarded as an expensive payment and therefore needs to be negotiated accordingly. It is found in the classical text entitled Pau-Paunna Sitti Rabiyatul Awaliya (PPSRA) that Sitti gave her sompa free and changed the sompa to mahr in the form of mastery of knowledge. However, most of the Bugis women could not understand the implied message, so they still adhered to the sompa plus panai’ tradition. The implication of the study is to provide a reference by dowry fighters so that Bugis women are brave to move from sompa tradition to mahr without panai’.
