Abstract

This study discusses the perspectives of lecturers in the Mandarin for Business Communication and Professional Department at Bosowa University on the effectiveness of both virtual and in-person presentations in the context of online and traditional classroom environments. The research explores their perceptions, experiences, and strategies as they integrate virtual presentations into their teaching methods during the start of the semester in 2023, while also investigating their readiness to adapt to different instructional approaches, including the potential transition to fully offline classes. Findings highlight the advantages of virtual presentations, such as the use of multimedia tools and digital resources to enhance the learning experience and accommodate diverse learning styles, as well as the convenience of recorded lectures for self-paced learning. Conversely, the study underscores the benefits of face-to-face interactions, fostering dynamic and spontaneous engagement, particularly in facilitating hands-on learning experiences and group activities. Technical challenges in virtual presentations and assessing student comprehension were identified as areas requiring attention. The study emphasizes the need for educators to adapt teaching strategies to capitalize on the unique strengths of each method and proposes instructional approaches, such as flipped learning, to optimize student engagement and participation in both virtual and traditional presentations. By contributing to the ongoing discourse on effective pedagogy, this research aims to enhance the quality of online and offline education, preparing lecturers and students for the demands of the dynamic and technology-driven learning environment

Abstract

English language proficiency is crucial in the global context as it serves as a medium to share ideas and information across nations. Recognizing the significance of English as an international language, the government of Indonesia has mandated English education from elementary school to university. Writing is one of the essential language skills that students must master, allowing them to express their feelings, opinions, and thoughts effectively. However, the study finds that many students lack interest and face challenges when it comes to writing. They struggle to generate ideas, choose appropriate topics, and organize their thoughts into coherent sentences. To address this issue, the researcher explores the implementation of the Extended Writing Project (EWP) method as a potential solution to improve students' writing proficiency. The research employs a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design to assess the effectiveness of the EWP method. The study is conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Polewali during the 2016/2017 academic year, with 24 students from one of the tenth-grade classes chosen as the sample through cluster random sampling. Throughout the research, the researcher guides students in proposing their own topics or selecting from a provided list, creating preliminary outlines, and clustering or listing ideas before organizing them into paragraphs. The EWP method emphasizes revision and editing, encouraging students to make multiple drafts and take responsibility for improving linguistic correctness. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in students' writing ability after the application of the EWP method. Notably, improvements are observed in content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. Students show enhanced coherence, relevance, and use of appropriate words, leading to better-organized paragraphs and improved language correctness. In conclusion, the Extended Writing Project method proves to be effective in enhancing students' writing skills in descriptive texts at SMA Negeri 1 Polewali. The method encourages students to take ownership of their writing process, resulting in significant progress in their writing abilities. To overcome challenges related to limited vocabulary, the use of dictionaries with active vocabulary-building activities is suggested. This research contributes valuable insights to the field of English language teaching and offers a potential solution to enhance students' writing proficiency in Indonesian schools.

Abstract

This research aim was to find out the correlation between students’ interest and their English learning achievement. The research question was “Is there any significant correlation between students’ interest and their English learning achievement?” This research applied correlational method. The subjects was the tenth grade students of SMKN 5 Makassar. The data was collected through questionnaire and English score documentation. In analyzed the data, the researcher used quantitative data analysis. The result of data analysis showed that there is positive significant correlation between students’ Interest and their English learning achievement at tenth grade students of SMKN 5 Makassar. This was proved by the coefficience correlation score rcount 0,814 > rtable 0,344 in 5% significant degree. Based on a correlational table, the correlation index (rxy = 0,814) is in interval 0.70 – 0.90, this means that the correlation belongs to “strong correlation”. Therefore, the higher the tenth grade students’ interest in SMKN 5 Makassar the higher their English learning achievement will be.
