Abstract

Diarrheal disease remains a significant public health problem, especially in children under five in developing countries with limited access to clean water and proper sanitation. In Indonesia, especially in Palu City, the incidence of diarrhea among children under five is still high and is related to the low knowledge and practice of clean and healthy living in the community. This study aimed to describe the level of community participation in efforts to reduce the incidence of diarrhea in children under five in Palu City. The study used descriptive quantitative method and was conducted from September 2020 to May 2021 in eight health centers representing all areas of Palu City. The sample consisted of 138 mothers of children under five, selected using a multistage random sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that most mothers of children under five were rarely involved in diarrhea prevention activities, such as health counseling, giving time and energy, and disseminating education to the community. The level of participation in the eight health centers tends to be quite low, with variations between regions that show inequality. The low involvement of mothers of children under five is thought to be influenced by a lack of awareness, limited time due to multiple roles, and not optimal support and supervision from the Puskesmas. It is concluded that mothers' participation in diarrhea prevention is still not optimal, so it is necessary to strengthen community-based health programs that are participatory and appropriate to the social context in order to increase active involvement in diarrhea prevention efforts in children under five.

Abstract

Adolescents in Palu City live in a seismic and tsunami-prone area, while initial coordination with the Youth Posyandu of Mabelopura Community Health Center indicated that structured disaster-mitigation education had not been provided routinely. This community service activity aimed to strengthen the cognitive component of disaster preparedness among adolescents through disaster-mitigation education integrated into Youth Posyandu activities. The activity was conducted on 13 September 2025 at the Lembaga Dakwah Islam Indonesia (LDII) Islamic Boarding School in Palu City and involved 50 adolescent participants. The implementation consisted of coordination with the community health center, a 10-item pre-test mapped to cognitive preparedness indicators, a 45-minute interactive education session using PowerPoint and earthquake-mitigation leaflets, discussion, and a post-test. The evaluation measured changes in disaster-mitigation knowledge; practical evacuation skills were identified as an aspect requiring follow-up simulation. The mean percentage of correct answers increased from 72.0% before education to 88.2% after education, with improvement in 8 of 10 indicators. The largest improvement occurred in the structural and non-structural mitigation indicator (from 6% to 60%; +54 percentage points), followed by the basic concept of mitigation (+40 percentage points) and the purpose of mitigation (+36 percentage points). The activity improved adolescents' knowledge and awareness of actions before, during, and after earthquake/tsunami events and supports Youth Posyandu as a community-based channel for disaster education. Future programs should combine education with evacuation drills and observational checklists to assess skills-based preparedness.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Tuberculosis disease is still a serious global public health problem characterized by high incidence, morbidity, and mortality that requires special attention and ongoing intervention from various parties.  Therefore, the implementation of  the Directly Observed Treatment Shortcourse (DOTS) strategy is one of the efforts to control TB that has proven to be effective globally in overcoming the problem of tuberculosis disease. The Sangurara Health Center Working Area has a high incidence of TB cases and there are still challenges in achieving optimal treatment success. Of the 13 existing health centers, Sangurara Health Center is the health center with the highest number of TB cases in Palu City.  This condition shows the importance of identifying specific factors that can affect the success of the TB program in this Working Area.  This study aims to analyze the relationship between treatment regularity, knowledge of tuberculosis and DOTS, and the role of PMO with treatment success. This type of research is quantitative with an analytical survey design and a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study is all TB patients who have successfully treated or failed in 2023 in the Sangurara Health Center Working Area of 53 people, with questionnaires as a data collection instrument. The results showed that the variables of regularity of treatment (p = 0.000), knowledge of TB and DOTS (p = 0.000), and the role of PMO (p = 0.000) had a significant relationship with the success of treatment of TB patients. The conclusion of this study is that the Directly Observed Treatment Shortcourse Strategy  has a significant relationship with the Success of Treatment of Tuberculosis Patients in the Working Area of the Sangurara Health Center, Palu City.
