Abstract

Tunisia is a country in the Middle East. Even though they are in the Middle East region which is included in the Arab region, they remain democratic. It all started with the enactment of the jasmine revolution from 2010-2011 which drew the world's attention. Starting from Tunisia, the spirit of revolution which became known as the Arab Spring swept across other Middle Eastern countries. The research study that the author wrote is related to Islam and democracy in Tunisia, to provide an overview of one of the countries in the Arab world which has revolutionized the governance order to become more flexible. In this research study, the historical method was used, which consisted of four stages, namely, finding sources, criticizing, interpreting, and writing. The results of this research study can be said that, Islam and democracy in Tunisia are well developed. This is marked by the existence of a national dialogue when there is a dispute or conflict between groups. When the jasmine revolution occurred in Tunisia which shocked the world, no one would have thought that Tunisia would rise quickly. After carrying out the process of government transition, Tunisia has sped up leaving other Middle Eastern countries in matters of democracy. Tunisia is now the only post-Arab Spring Middle Eastern country that has been able to rise up and implement democratic principles in its country. After the revolution, democratic values were so visible, such as the existence of elections, freedom of opinion, giving space to women, freedom of religion, expression, the emergence of majlis ta'lim Islamic religious studies, the birth of mass organizations is proof that Islam and democracy in Tunisia complement each other.

Abstract

Penghulu is a servant in the religious aspect in the Surakarta Sunanate in particular and in the Archipelago in general. He is someone who serves as a spiritual figure in Kasunanan. Penghulu is interesting to review, considering that currently it is not highly valued. This research on the prince uses the historical method with four stages of research, namely, first, searching for documents, second, criticizing documents, third, carrying out interpretations or interpretations, and fourth, presenting them in written form. In this research it can be concluded that, a penghulu is needed to receive education, which in the process of education in Kasunanan Surakarta is arranged through two madrasah levels, namely, first Madrasah Waran Hoeparanta (Voorbereidende-Afdeeling) which is divided into two parts and taken for 5 years with a minimum age of 15 years. Meanwhile, the second is the Wara Krida-Reh-Wara (Vak-Afdeeling) Madrasah which is taken for 4 years with the condition that students are not yet 25 years old. The penghulu who is part of the Ndalem servant of the Kasunanan Surakarta has two positions, namely, first, the servant of the master of the suranata, who is in charge of reciting prayers and tahlil, as well as serving as porters of port goods and serving incense. Second, Abdi ndalem ngulama anon-anon, who has the task of welcoming the Kasunanan tradition, assisting in the implementation of marriages of the sons and daughters of the ndalem, and as an instructor of Islam in the Surakarta Sunanate. As a royal servant in the Kasunanan Surakarta. The life of the prince is paid by the Surakarta Sunanate. The prince has high charisma, because apart from being a courtier, he is also a role model in the religious aspects of the Kasunanan community and public society, so that in his life, the prince deserves to have a decent and guaranteed life.

Abstract

Blambangan, which is the easternmost region of Java Island, has a long history as the last Hindu stronghold in Java and serves as an important transitional space in the process of Islamization. This research aims to reveal how the process of religious blending occurred, as well as how local historical narratives represent this blending in the form of tombstones, babad (chronicles) texts, and oral traditions. Through a qualitative approach using historical methods divided into Heuristics, Criticism, Interpretation, and Historiography. This study finds that the blending process of Hinduism and Islam was a form of cultural acculturation that took place peacefully and continuously. The political transition from local kingdoms to colonial rule also encouraged the transformation of the local community’s religious and cultural identity. The spread of Islam did not completely erase the Hindu cultural heritage but instead occurred within a harmonious framework of acculturation. This is evident in religious practices, customs, architecture, and social systems that combine Hindu elements with Islamic values. The spatial layout of the city of Banyuwangi, the establishment of the Great Mosque Baiturrahman, as well as the existence of tombstones with Arabic-Pegon inscriptions. Local historiography, such as the Babad Blambangan, along with colonial records and archaeological findings, reinforces the narrative that the Hindu-Islam blending in Blambangan was not merely a process of religious conversion, but rather a complex socio-cultural transformation.

Abstract

The increasing complexity of Indonesia’s plural society demands a model of leadership that is not only structurally effective but also inclusive in managing cultural, religious, and social identity diversity. However, studies on multicultural leadership are still dominated by Western theories, while explorations of local wisdom remain relatively limited. In fact, Nusantara traditions such as Serat Nitisruti by Pangeran Karanggayam contain teachings on the gusti-kawula relationship, social harmony, and the legitimacy of power based on morality. The scope of this research is focused on interpreting the relationship between social harmony, the legitimacy of power, and the management of cultural diversity as represented in the text. The purpose of this study is to uncover the model of multicultural leadership offered by Serat Nitisruti and its relevance within the context of a plural society. This study employs a qualitative research design with a textual analysis approach, hermeneutics, and cultural studies to interpret the symbols, normative teachings, and leadership values contained in the manuscript. The results indicate that Serat Nitisruti represents a leadership model that emphasizes a balance between power and ethics, as well as the leader’s ability to maintain harmony amid social and cultural diversity. Leadership is understood as non-dominative, but rather participatory and oriented toward justice, wisdom, and self-restraint. Therefore, Serat Nitisruti offers a multicultural leadership paradigm grounded in Javanese local wisdom that places harmony and diversity as the foundation of the legitimacy of power, thereby holding conceptual relevance for the development of inclusive leadership in contemporary Indonesia.
