Abstract

Abstract

This study aims at showing the visual signs used to signify the concept of “Young, Different and Dangerous” in a magazine’s fashion spread. The visual signs are observed by using Dyer’s theory of human signs (1982) and the analysis is focused on the reading of visual signs at two orders of signification, the denotation and connotation. The findings show that the model’s appearance, manner, activity and setting of place are reflections of the magazine’s desired concepts, which suggested by the editor-in-chief. By understanding this, the visual images in fashion magazine, especially NYLON Indonesia, are constructed in such a way to reflect the magazine’s identity and to communicate the magazine’s branding as well

Abstract

Multimodal communication employs multiple semiotic modes to convey meaning. Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal is a documentary about Rick Singer, an education entrepreneur who committed the bribes. This study analyzed his representation through the oral and visual modes and was aimed at showing how multimodality could help reveal particular character representations. This study applies multimodal theory (Kress & Leeuwen, 2006) and semiotic modes (Chia & Chan, 2017). The oral monologues and dialogues, and the visuals of people, objects, and places were scrutinized to observe how Rick Singer was depicted. As a result, he was seen being portrayed as a wealthy and successful entrepreneur with many high-ranking connections, who strategically manipulated his clients and his university partners in a clever scheming maneuver. The interplay of both the oral and visual modes has resulted in a relatively complete picture of the main actor of this documentary.

Abstract

This study investigates the presuppositions in Yang Jong Hoon’s utterances in the series "Law School". This study aims to understand how presuppositions are used by lawyers and prosecutors. The theories used are by Yule (1996, 2020). The findings reveal the similarities and differences in the use of presuppositions when Yang Jong Hoon was a prosecutor and a lawyer. A similarity between both roles is that factive presupposition only occurred once as these professions require credibility. The most prominent types of presupposition, however, show differences. In Yang Jong Hoon’s utterances as a prosecutor, existential presupposition appears most frequently to successfully charge the defendant as guilty, often done by presenting proof. In contrast, in Yang Jong Hoon’s utterances as a lawyer, lexical presupposition appears most frequently to recount the situation and thus use change-of-state verbs. The study concludes that an understanding and strategic use of presuppositions are essential in legal debates.

Abstract

This study investigates the speech acts that are present within Shameika’s polite and impolite utterances as responses to Mr. Clark in the movie “The Ron Clark Story”. It is aimed to understand how the compatibility between illocutionary act and intended perlocutionary effect can indicate the politeness degree in educational settings by students and teacher. This research addresses a gap in the relation between speech act and politeness degree within educational context, particularly focusing on Shameika as a student. The analysis is based on theories by Austin (1962), Short (1997), Brown and Levinson (1978), Culpeper (2011), and Brown and Prieto (2017). The findings reveal that there is a relation between speech act and politeness degree. The illocutionary act of Shameika’s impolite utterances that are directed toward Mr. Clark cannot fulfil Mr. Clark’s intended perlocutionary effect, even when she uses mock impoliteness when their relationship is already close. Meanwhile, the illocutionary act of Shameika’s polite utterances that are directed toward Mr. Clark can fulfil Mr. Clark’s intended perlocutionary effect, even if the polite utterance is not produced voluntarily by Shameika. The study concludes that one of the most effective ways for a student to produce polite utterances toward a teacher is by fulfilling the teacher’s intention.

Abstract

This research investigates the types of rhetorical devices that Brian Tracy used in his business presentation, three types of rhetorical devices that are mostly used, and how these rhetorical devices are used to make emphasis on his business tips and suggestions. This research used Harris (2018) and Fahnestock (2011) theories on rhetorical devices. The findings showed that Brian Tracy utilized different types of rhetorical devices to aid him in emphasizing his main idea, such as metaphor, simile, sentential adverb, asyndeton, polysyndeton, hyperbole, paralepsis, litotes, and climax. The three most used types of rhetorical devices in his presentation are Metaphor, Sentential Adverb and Simile. Brian Tracy utilized metaphor to create a clearer imagery, sentential adverb to separate the anecdotes and conclusion, and simile to give comparison of two subjects. From the findings, the writer concludes that rhetorical devices can help the presenter in delivering his main points. Rhetorical devices help in emphasizing the main idea and creates a more engaging presentation with the audience, hence creating a more impactful and beneficial presentation.
