Abstract

What is the core purpose of Islamic banking? Why is the existence of Islamic banking so important? It can not be denied, the answer of the crucial question about the purpose of establishing Islamic banking is still a fragmentary discussion. If studied more deeply, Islamic banking is an entity that has its own unique characteristics, especially when compared with conventional banking. Therefore, Islamic banking, both in theory and practice, should make paradigm shifts, especially in terms of performance measurement that is not only limited to financial parameters. This study aims to explore the extent to which the revitalization of the concept of maqāṣid in Islamic finance, especially banking. The result shows that the revitalization of the concept of maqāṣid defined by Muhammad Abu Zahrah and Abdul Majid Najjar can be used to measure the performance of sharia banking in a more measurable way.Apakah sebenarnya tujuan inti dari perbankan syariah? Kenapa eksistensi perbankan syariah begitu penting?

Abstract

Technology disruption brings us to a new era full of opportunities and challenges. In digital transformation, various cutting-edge innovations in the economy were born and developed. At this point, Islamic economics and finance can utilize the advantages provided by technological advances, such as features of generativity, convergence, and culture of democratization to promote ethical principles such as togetherness, justice, equality, and honesty. In the realm of research, if previously the issue of technology had not been enough of the attention of researchers, then the trends were slowly changing. This research tries to review the research on the theme of Islamic economics and finance with the emphasis on the use of the technology sector in it. This research is a literature review and uses a descriptive analysis of 28 English-language articles based on Google Scholar. The sample articles are those published from 2014 to 2019. The results showed that technology adoption has become a common concern of researchers in the field of Islamic economics and finance. The theme of developing technology-based Islamic economic and financial instruments in various sectors continues to emerge, from Islamic banking, Islamic finance, Islamic monetary systems, and zakat. Besides, this research also offers a framework on how to develop Islamic economic and financial research going forward.

Abstract

Discussions about usury often spark long debates, as well as raise ambivalence. There has been a lot of literature highlighting the dynamics of this issue with various emphases. With the growing discourse on the establishment of Islamic economics in Indonesia, the Hijrah from Ribā movement originating from the grassroots is interesting to observe. However, there is still little literature that explores their personal world of experiences. This study seeks to understand how Islamic economic activists view usury. Three informants from the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Indonesia were selected for this study to be interviewed in a semi-structured manner. Interview transcripts were reviewed qualitatively using the IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) approach. Data analysis revealed five superordinate themes: (1) business as usual, (2) a turning point, (3) learning process and role of the MUI fatwa, (4) post-hijrah spiritual experience, and (5) creative action: beyond debate. The findings of this study demonstrate the complexity of the psycho-social economic dimension, which has been neglected and is often ignored in the realm of modern positivism culture, which assumes economic reality to be autonomous and deterministic. Some methodological notes were also put forward to provide another facet in the development of Islamic economics research.

Abstract

The practice of waqf accountability in general often places excessive emphasis on technical and financial measurements, thereby neglecting the humanitarian mission that constitutes the very essence of waqf institutions. This paper seeks to address that limitation by proposing the idea of a “humanization of waqf accountability”, an integrated framework grounded in the prophetic social thought of Kuntowijoyo. The framework rests upon three main pillars. First, active community participation, which positions beneficiaries not as passive recipients but as empowered subjects. Second, social justice, which redefines waqf as an instrument for inclusive and sustainable development rather than merely a charitable activity. Third, community well-being, regarded as the ultimate goal, is measured through holistic indicators of human dignity. By integrating these pillars, this comprehensive paradigm not only aligns waqf governance with its ethical foundations but also responds to contemporary challenges, such as the need for beneficiary-centered management and transparent reporting. In essence, this human-oriented approach provides a pathway for waqf institutions to enhance their social impact, build trust among stakeholders, and fulfill their mandate in realizing sustainable community development more effectively.
