Abstract

In the Head CT-Scan examination using the Alderson Rando Phantom Head Slice, a shield is needed to reduce the radiation dose to the eyepiece. This study aims to see the effect of using protectors made of rubber, copper and bismuth to reduce the radiation dose of the eyepiece in CT-Scan examinations. It was found that the average dose reduction for 300 mAs current was 24%± 3% of the left eye lens and 20% ± 6% of the right eye lens, 350 mAs current was 23% ± 3% of the left eye lens and 18% ± 9% of the right eye lens, and 400 mAs current was 19% ± 3% of the left eye lens and 28% ± 3% of the right eye lens. Abstract

Dose measurements were performed using Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLDs) placed on a phantom to simulate patient anatomy. Data were collected under two conditions—without shielding and with the application of thyroid shielding—across four tube current–time (mAs) settings: 300, 350, 400, and 450 mAs. The TLD output values, initially recorded in nanocoulombs (nC), were converted into equivalent dose units (mSv) to enable quantitative assessment of dose reduction. The findings indicate that the use of radiation shielding resulted in a dose reduction of approximately 21%–24% across all tested mAs variations, demonstrating a consistent protective effect. The radiation dose reduction values obtained in this research, where shielding made of rubber, copper, and bismuth successfully reduced the dose obtained during CT scans of the neck by 19%-20%. The reduction values obtained in this research are quite helpful in reducing the risk of thyroid cancer. Keywords: Shielding (Rubber, Copper, and Bismuth), TLD, Thyroid, Dosage.
