Abstract

Given a mandate to preserve the Indonesia tropical forest through its education, research, and community service activities, the Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada (FoF UGM) has reached broad stakeholders to support sustainable forest management and climate mitigation (SDG 13 and 17). FoF UGM supports basic and applied research contributing to forestry industrialization (SDG 9), such as improved planting materials for Tectona grandis and Eucalyptus sp. In collaboration with the community (SDG 1 and 2), FoF UGM also diversifies kajuput essential oil produced in Wanagama and UGM teaching forests. Technology innovations such as glue and cross-laminated timber, biodiesel, information systems, and drone technologies for land rehabilitation and carbon accounting represent the institution's commitment to improving Indonesia's forest, forestry, community, and national economy (SDG 13 and 15).

Abstract

Gunung Merapi National Park (GMNP) is an inseparable conservation area from the surrounding community, as the buffer village community has used its existing forest resources. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the forest resources used by the buffer village community and assess the economic benefit value generated by GMNP. The economic benefits evaluation adopted the direct use value approach and market prices. The results showed that the community used water, firewood, grass, land, and sand. Utilization was conducted in utilization, traditional, and rehabilitation zones. These resource utilizations generated a value of IDR426,230,560,828/year, significantly contributing to the welfare of the buffer village community.

Abstract

Previous research had shown that climate change often posed a critical challenge to humans, both currently and in the future. This had led to the implementation of targets by countries around the globe for the transition to net-zeroemissions. Indonesia, in particular, had atargetof achieving netzero by 2060, aswell asa national vision of 'Golden Indonesia 2045'. Therefore, this research aimed to discuss the strategic role of the forestry sector in climate mitigation through forest and land management, emissions-reduction actions, carbon-sequestration enhancement, and forest-based renewable energy development. The results emphasized the importance of reinventing forestry education to support the transition. Curriculum transformation toward interdisciplinary, integrative, and collaborative approaches was required to develop adaptive graduate capacities to achieve the targets.
