Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of holding time on the pack carburizing process using mixed media from coconut shell charcoal and beef bone powder with a composition of 70% coconut shell charcoal and 30% beef bone by volume. The pack carburizing process was carried out at a temperature of 950°C with a variation of heating time of 1, 3 and 5 hours, then a fast immersion process was carried out in water. To determine the effect of time eliminated on the process, hardness and metallographic tests were carried out. The test results showed that the chemical composition of the steel sample used in this study was AISI 1045 steel with a carbon content of 0.40%. In addition, the maximum average hardness test results were obtained for the material that underwent a solid carburizing process with a 5-hour elimination time of 346 HV (Hardness Rockwell), with the phases formed in the samples undergoing the pack carburizing process were ferrite, pearlite, and Partly there is a martensite phase.
