There has been a significant growth of enthusiasm and audience in the contemporary art events in Indonesia for the past ten years. Technology today plays a big role in creating complex yet dynamic relations between the audience, the artwork and the artist. It is widely recognized that nowadays, selfies are a common ritual also seen in art exhibitions and is often at the core of how the audience consumes and interacts with the artwork and the artist. This research will seek to examine how selfie as method of art consumption changes the function, relation as well as dynamics between the audience and the artwork as a mean of identity construction. Furthermore, this article will also try to investigate how selfie, as method of contemporary art consumption, to a certain extend influence or even determine the production aspect of the artwork done by contemporary artists, particularly in the Jakarta Art Scene.

Abstract

AbstractAccording to the World Giving Index, a study done by the Charities Aid Foundation that provides insights into the global trends of generosity, Indonesia has taken the top position of the chart and was named 2020’s most charitable country in the world. The notion of communality, consensus and collectivity, also known in Javanese as gotong royong or mutual assistance, a prominent characteristic associated with the traditional village life, appeared to also transpire within the global village. As we are universally connected through the digital world and are collectively experiencing a global pandemic where all art activities came to a halt, it is important to look further into how art adapted to these sudden changes and limitations of circumstances. Using a cultural studies approach and virtual ethnography data collecting, this paper will seek to examine how several online art initiatives try to embody the spirit of collectivity, using artworks as a tool of activism to help others survive the pandemic and at the same time reimagining the notion of gotong royong that can persist in the digital village that functions as a form of collective belonging to the concept of a nation.

Abstract

In a film production, production design is an important aspect that supports the narrative or story. In production design visual metaphors are often used as concepts for sets and props which have the ability to transform a long text into a shorter visual. Visual metaphor itself is a representation of a place, person, nature, and object that can be a tool to build a narrative as well as describe the nature of a character in a film. The use of visual metaphors can be done by understanding the characters in the film, because each have different characteristics and its own uniqueness. By understanding and using the 3-dimensional aspect of the character as the basis for the design of sets and props, production designers can apply visual metaphors in the design of sets and properties that are suitable for the needs of characters and narratives in films. This paper uses a qualitative approach which elaborates the process of applying visual metaphors into the set and properties design, by using the 3-dimensional character theory as the base for producing the short film trailer entitled Setengah Nada Bergeming. This research finds that by dissecting each element of the 3-dimensional character, production designer can intensify not only how a character is represented and how its contributes in building the entire narrative of the story. Keyword: visual metaphors, 3-D characters, sets, properties, short film, trailer.
