Abstract

The concept of al-manzilah bayna al-manzilatain at the first time was popularized by Muktazilah, one of the Islamic theological sects. They believe that there is a place between heaven and hell which is reserved for the believers that commit the major sins and do not repent until they die. On the other hand, the Qur‟an also emphasizes the existence of a place between heaven and hell which is called al[1]A‟raf in verse 46 dan 48 of surah al-A‟raf. The Qur‟an clearly describes that the residents of al-A'raf are not the residents of heaven or hell. This research aims to describe correlation of the term al-A‟raf in the Qur‟an with the concept of al[1]manzilah bayna al-mazilatain in Muktazilah theological as a place for the believers who commit major sins and do not repent when the death come. This research is a library research that focuses on the study of manuscripts with thematic interpretation approaches and semantic studies of the verses of al-A‟raf in the Qur‟an. The result of this research shows that there is not correlation between term al-A‟raf in the Qur‟an and the concept of al-manzilah bayna al[1]mazilatain in Muktazilah theological. Because according on the Qur‟an interpreters, al-A‟raf is provided for the believers who their bads and goods are balanced, so they are not qualified to be in heaven or hell. It is much different from al-manzilah baina al-manzilatain which is believed to be a place for the believers that commit major sins and do not repent until they die.
