Abstract

This study examines the effect of adding alginate to Calcium Oxide (CaO) powder as an adsorbent pallets in the process of increasing the alcohol levels using the adsorption distillation method. The adsorption distillation method is one of the methods that can be used in alcohol purification. Pure alcohol can be used as an alternative fuel or as an additive in fuel so that it can increase the octane number and produce environmentally friendly exhaust gases. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of varying alginate concentrations on mixing calcium oxide (CaO) powder to increase technical ethanol content. Alginate concentrations used were 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5% and 3%. The feed ethanol used is 70% and 96% ethanol. The results showed that the optimum concentration of alginate mixed with Calcium Oxide (CaO) powder to become an adsorbent to increase the ethanol content was 2.5%, which increased the ethanol content from 70% to 89% and from 96% to 98.25%. The pore volume of the adsorbent with the addition of 2.5% alginate was 0.89 ml. The ipenelotian results show that the effect of adding alginate to calcium oxide powder can affect the pore density of the alginate gel on calcium oxide powder. The pore density will affect the pore volume of the adsorbent. The increase in pore volume indicates that more adsorbent pores are formed. The more the number of pores in the adsorbent, the ability of the adsorbent to absorb water increases.

Abstract

Abstrak: Depot Air Isi Ulang (DAMIU) “I- Three” selaku mitra berkawasan di Kecamatan Moncongloe, Maros Sulawesi Selatan mengalami masalah perubahan kualitas produk air minum isi ulang saat musim hujan. The I-Three Refillable Water Depot (DAMIU), a partner in the Moncongloe District, Maros, South Sulawesi, experienced problems with changes in the quality of refillable drinking water during the rainy season. The area is classified as a swampy area with high turbidity and acidic pH, which has an impact on declining sales volume and membrane filters that easily become dirty. The objective of this community service activity is to provide hard skills and soft skills to refillable water depot partners in improving product quality through assistance in installing pretreatment equipment, training in water quality analysis using portable pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), iron content, and E. coli bacteria testing kits, as well as creating billboards. The methods used to solve these problems consisted of discussions, the installation of pretreatment equipment and testing, and training in water quality monitoring using portable analysis tools for measuring pH, TDS, iron content, and E. coli bacteria test kits. The activity evaluation consisted of administering a questionnaire with 7 questions before and after the activity to the owner of DAMIU I Three and two of his employees to determine the improvement in the soft skills of the partners. In addition, an evaluation of the improvement in water quality parameters was carried out in the form of measuring pH, TDS, iron content, and E. coli bacteria parameters so that the improvement in water quality could be determined. The results showed that the partners' soft skills regarding the importance of pretreatment and regular independent water analysis increased by 40% to 95%. Water quality testing after installing pretreatment showed that acidic pH (5.4) was neutralized to neutral pH (7.4) in the raw water. Additionally, all water test parameters met standards (TDS=25 ppm and no Fe or E. coli).

Abstract

Abstract: A serious problem for farmers is their lack of knowledge and skills in innovating alternative animal feed. Feed costs account for more than 70% of total production costs, impacting the sustainability of independent livestock farmers' businesses. The objective of this activity is to determine the effect of the educational process on improving farmers' knowledge and skills in producing alternative animal feed from organic waste through the bioconversion of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae or maggots. The activity method involved an educational process for independent farmers in one area in the Bontonompo sub-district, consisting of 25 people. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire consisting of seven knowledge questions and four skill questions, which were administered before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the implementation of the counseling and training. The results of the activity showed that the PDEA (planning, doing, assessing, evaluating) education model was proven to be effective in increasing participants' knowledge by 76-90% and skills by 80-96%, as well as having a significant impact on reducing feed costs for farmers by 25-40%. The application of the PDEA education model can be a reference for processing organic waste into maggot feed.
