Abstract

The Indonesian people's resistance to Japanese rule was motivated by the oppression carried out by Japan. The Indonesian people realized that the Japanese had acted arbitrarily and inhumanely, even the Japanese also often massacred the Indonesian people and employed them inhumanely which we commonly know as romusha. Other factors also triggered the Indonesian people to fight against Japan. This research uses a qualitative method. By means of literature studies or literature studies by looking for various sources such as journals, books, articles, theses and so on. The findings from these sources we raise into four discussions, namely the reign of the Japanese occupation, the nature of the Japanese occupation, the resistance of the Indonesian people against Japan, the end of the Japanese occupation in Indonesia. It is hoped that after reading this journal, it can increase readers' interest in adding knowledge about history and also build a sense of nationalism and love for the country for readers.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian adalah mengkaji peran kereta api pada masa kolonial di Medan dan pengaruhnya terhadap masyarakat Sumatera Utara pada tahun 1865-2020. Metode penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif deskriptif dengan mengamati sebanyak mungkin orang, kelompok, atau peristiwa yang berbeda untuk mengkarakterisasi, mengklarifikasi, dan memberikan jawaban yang lebih menyeluruh terhadap pertanyaan penelitian.. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana peran kereta api pada masa kolonial di Medan dan pengaruhnya terhadap masyarakat Sumatera Utara pada tahun 1865-2020.

Abstract

This study examines gender-based oppression and exploitation experienced by female contract laborers in the Deli tobacco plantations between 1870 and 1930. It explores how the colonial plantation system shaped women’s position and exposed them to social, economic, and sexual inequality. This research draws on a qualitative literature review of books, scholarly articles, historical reports, and other relevant historical sources. The findings show that female laborers occupied a subordinate position within the plantation workforce. They were assigned low-paid work, subjected to strict supervision, and received minimal labor protection. The gender imbalance within plantation communities also contributed to the expansion of prostitution, exposing women to sexual exploitation and serious social and health consequences. These findings demonstrate that the colonial plantation system exploited women not only economically but also through unequal gender relations and power structures embedded in the contract labor system. By centering women’s experiences, this study contributes to the historiography of women, labor, and colonialism in Indonesia.
