Abstract

Various factors influence independence in early childhood, categorized as internal and external elements. The Montessori "Practical Life" approach plays a crucial role in developing self-care skills in young children by fostering independence, motor coordination, and responsibility through real-life daily activities. This study aims to describe and analyze the implementation of Montessori Practical Life activities in developing self-care skills among children at PAUD Plus Matholi'ul Hikmah, and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors involved. The study employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with educators and the school principal, and document analysis. Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman interactive model—comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing—along with triangulation to verify data validity. The findings indicate that Practical Life activities—such as pouring, folding, buttoning clothes, cleaning tables, and caring for plants—effectively enhance children's independence, fine motor coordination, concentration, and self-care discipline. Supporting factors include access to Montessori-aligned materials and consistent educator guidance, while inhibiting factors include limited facilities and varying levels of child readiness. The Montessori Practical Life approach is an effective strategy for developing self-care skills in early childhood.
