Abstract

Abstract

Understanding English literary works is evitably a big problem for the students of non-English-speaking countries. The writer proposes that intertextuality may help the students to understand them better. Through her study, she tries to find out the problems the students have in understanding literary works, in this case, novels; and to investigate how intertextual study through films can help them to solve the problems. By doing observation and interview to the students in her class of English Prose, she finds out that the problems are the difficulty to understand the sense of the language, the cultural gap, the uncontextuality with their experience, the difficulty to grasp the imagery, and the lack of information about the literary works. Through the films adapted from the novels they read, the students can overcome their problems. The films make them understand the sense of the language, understand the culture, more aware of the relation among people and the situation, feel that they become part of the issues in their lives, get more vivid images about the setting, the characters and other elements, familiar with the issues in the works. All of them help them to understand more the novels they are reading. Keywords: Intertextuality, Film Adaptation

Abstract

Pesantren literature challenges an issue of confession and acceptance in Indonesian literature. Questions on pesantren literature are concerned with the existence and literary quality of the works included in the category of pesantren literature. The important question is whether the works have literary uniqueness as specific genre that can be distinguished from other kinds of literary works. This article will not identify the literary quality of pesantren literature but tries to discuss the existence of pesantren literature among other Indonesian literary works. The discussion is expected to give an alternative perspective on the position of pesantren literature in the whole constellation of Indonesian literature.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Allegory, expressive approach, violation, the right to freedom of expression

Abstract

This research examines how BTS’s music video Butter represents cultural hybridization between Korean and Western pop cultures through Stuart Hall’s Circuit of Culture theory. Although hybridization in K-Pop has been widely discussed, in depth analysis of visual aesthetics in music videos stays limited. This research addresses the gap by analyzing Butter through five interconnected aspects, regulation, production, representation, consumption, and identity, which collectively construct complex and transnational cultural meanings. The research employs a qualitative method using thematic and semiotic analysis of choreography, costumes, set designs, and other visual symbols. Data validity is strengthened through triangulation by analyzing the official Butter music video, audience comments on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, as well as producer interviews published in Variety. The results show that Butter blends cultural elements such as retro Western fashion with Korean-style choreography, the use of English lyrics to reach an international audience, and the building of BTS’s identity through emotional engagement with fans. This hybridization shows a cultural negotiation process rather than merely a market strategy. The research confirms that BTS successfully integrates Korean cultural elements into a global framework, creating cross-cultural appeal that reinforces their position as international cultural icons.
