Abstract

This study investigates the impact of integrating ethnoscience with problem-based learning (PBL) on the enhancement of critical thinking skills among secondary school students. Employing a nonequivalent control group design with purposive sampling, the research involved 66 students from a Nigerian secondary school, divided into experimental (n=31) and control (n=35) groups. The experimental group engaged in a PBL curriculum enriched with ethnoscience, while the control group received traditional expository teaching. The study aimed to bridge the gap in current educational practices by incorporating cultural relevance into science education, thus making learning more meaningful and directly applicable to students' lives. Results indicated a significant improvement in the critical thinking abilities of the experimental group, as evidenced by their pretest and posttest scores, compared to the control group. The findings underscore the effectiveness of the ethnoscience-integrated PBL approach in fostering higher-order thinking skills, suggesting a notable advancement over conventional teaching methods. This research contributes to the educational literature by demonstrating the benefits of combining ethnoscience and PBL, advocating for a shift towards more dynamic, student-centered, and culturally relevant teaching strategies. The study highlights the importance of contextual learning experiences and suggests further exploration across various disciplines and educational levels to validate the approach's effectiveness and applicability.

Abstract

In humans, micronutrients are special nutrients that are supposed to be obtained from diets in small amounts to aid body functioning, growth, and development. Micronutrients deficiency results due to low dietary nutrients intake and is currently a worldwide threat that affects humans in various ways, including learning or brain functioning. Sokoto State Nigeria due to its peculiarities such as arid land, poverty, poor education, single-diet nutrition, etc. should be of great risk of micronutrients deficiencies. The objective of this review paper is concerned about micronutrients deficiencies with regards to Sokoto State Nigeria and consequences on brain function. Micronutrients prevalence in Sokoto Nigeria, micronutrients in foods, insufficiency of nutrients in soil, consequences of excess micronutrients, micronutrients deficiencies, causes, etc. were described. Multifold approach to this myriad task should be put forward and tackled head-on; otherwise, the society (Sokoto) will languish continuously with maternal and child mortalities, abnormalities, mental derangements, aa well as poor productivity..

Abstract

The issue of iodine deficiency is a historic threat that affects all regions of the world. Iodine is a critical element belonging to the halogens that is used to make vital hormones (thyroid hormones) for the proper functioning of the human or mammalian body. Iodine is obtained from the diet of either plant or animal origin or water. Iodine for plants uptake is obtained from soil, which is affected by the nature of the environment such as climate, locations, topography, iodine fixation potential, proximity to sea and relations. The failure of the proper iodine cycling spurs a poor intake by humans. Poor dietary intake of iodine occurs at different levels, but the entire complex dealing with poor iodine intake is termed as iodine deficiencies, such as goiter, cretinism, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism. Effects resulting from iodine deficiency are many and enormous. The iodine deficiency among other things affect the brain (nervous system functioning) probably because it affects the whole body metabolism when thyroid hormones are insufficient, and neurotransmitters and oxidative stress regulations are limited. It is important to deliberately educate the public, fortify foods properly, give iodine supplements, monitor iodine deficiencies, and utilize diverse foods; because IDD cause mental retardation among other things.
