Abstract

Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) has been increasingly promoted in Indonesia as an alternative waste-to-energy solution, particularly for industrial applications such as cement production. This study presents a qualitative narrative review that explores the multidimensional environmental impacts of RDF implementation, with a specific focus on the Indonesian context. Four key themes were examined: air pollution, public health risks, low energy efficiency, and the lack of emission monitoring and environmental oversight. Findings indicate that RDF combustion contributes to hazardous emissions, including dioxins, heavy metals, and fine particulates, especially where waste segregation is inadequate. Public health issues such as respiratory infections and long-term toxic exposure are exacerbated by weak regulatory systems and the absence of Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS). Additionally, Indonesia’s high organic waste content undermines RDF’s energy efficiency and sustainability. The review concludes that RDF, in its current form, poses significant environmental and governance challenges and must be reevaluated through the lens of public health protection, regulatory reform, and circular economy principles.

Abstract

This study investigates the pivotal role of community behavior in adopting renewable energy as a pathway toward achieving carbon neutrality in island communities. Employing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the research examines how critical dimensions adaptive attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention influence individual and collective actions for sustainable energy transitions. The findings reveal that adaptive attitude (H1) significantly impacts subjective norms (p = 0.015), suggesting that positive perceptions of renewable energy benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and potential economic opportunities, foster widespread community support. This indicates that when individuals view renewable energy favorably, they contribute to shaping societal norms that prioritize sustainable energy adoption. Subjective norms (H2) exert a strong influence on perceived behavioral control (p < 0.001), underscoring the importance of social networks and cultural dynamics in mobilizing community participation. Furthermore, adaptive attitude (H3) directly affects intention (p = 0.064), indicating that personal beliefs and awareness about the advantages of renewable energy drive individuals' readiness to engage in sustainable practices. The results also show that subjective norms (H4) play a critical role in shaping intention (p < 0.001), emphasizing the power of social influence, including peer encouragement and collective advocacy, in motivating communities to take action. This demonstrates that societal endorsement of renewable energy creates a positive feedback loop that strengthens individuals’ intentions to act. While perceived behavioral control (H5) did not have a direct effect on intention, it remains an essential factor in addressing barriers. Finally, the study finds that intention (H6) serves as a direct driver of tangible support for renewable energy projects (p < 0.001), bridging motivation and concrete actions such as the installation of solar panels, adoption of wind energy systems, and participation in local energy cooperatives.

Abstract

The burgeoning ecotourism industry, aiming for sustainability and minimal environmental impact, has prompted many regions to reevaluate their tourism practices.. This study delves deep into Goa Rangko, a promising destination within Manggarai Barat, Indonesia, by implementing an ecotourism potential framework combined with SWOT analysis. This paper identifies the intrinsic strengths of Goa Rangko, such as its untouched natural beauty, indigenous culture, and governmental initiatives fostering eco-friendliness. It concurrently uncovers weaknesses in the tourism sector, including waste management concerns and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The exploration reveals multiple opportunities for sustainable growth, emphasizing unique product promotion, embracing technological advances, and fostering collaborations while accounting for impending threats, such as environmental degradation and competitive destinations. By integrating the ecotourism potential framework with SWOT analysis, this study provides a comprehensive roadmap for Goa Rangko’s tourism sector, highlighting avenues for optimizing tourist experiences and environmental stewardship.
