Abstract

In the future, there will be a shift in the pattern of managing urban development activities. Conventional method that is oriented more on the physical aspect relied more on the government ideas and initiative, referred more on the historical development trend and more “inward looking” toward the country, will not be appropriate to be used as the basis of urban development management in the future. To face all those challenges, a new breakthrough in managing urban development is needed.

Abstract

The growing demand on land, while the supply is limited, is the reason for the sharp increase in the value of land in urban area. On the one hand, the provision of urban infrastructure services using land as the bases of activities are forced to fulfill the ever growing demand of human needs. On the other hand, the improvements of infrastructure services are responsibility of the government.The accumulation of that condition resulted in the degradation of the urban environmental quality, such as the spread of slum area, the increase in traffic congestion, and poor utility services.

Abstract

Many problems are still encountered in spatial planning, from planning which is still oriented toward administrative region criteria, the lack legal instruments in spatial control, disparity perception between agencies over the importance of spatial plan pattern as the basis of development, the lack of basis data and accurate information, until the limited ability of spatial planning institutions. Efforts should be done to solve the problems are enhancing the quality and the ability of spatial planning apparatus. In accordance with those efforts, public and business sector participation in spatial planning should be enhanced. Also needed in these efforts is the strengthening of spatial planning control and information system in spatial planning.
