Abstract

Jabotabek region is an area of 6580 km2 with a population more than 20 million. In the year 2010, Jabotabek is estimated to have more than 29 million population. For the last ten years, the role of private developers has increased sharply in this region. They have proposed and started to develop new towns and industrial estates ranging from 700 ha to 6000 ha covering an area of more than 43000 ha. This rapid new town development, however, has not been followed and facilitated with the needed infrastructure. The government regulations require only the private developers to provide internal or local facilities and services for the new development. This in turn may create major problem at regional level, such as traffic congestion, flooding, water shortage etc. This is what this paper would like to address, i.e. how serious the problem will be – especially the regional transportation problem ——and what should the government do to anticipate this rapidly new town development region. Given the availability of the data, this paper will be focused on Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) which is located in Kabupaten Tangerang as a case study.

Abstract

Economic crisis has created negative effects on users, owners, and drivers of urban public transit system. To analyze the impacts, a study was conducted for urban public transit system in Bandung. Respondents were asked various questions related to travel and other expences before and after the crisis. The results showed how the low income users were affected the most. They were captive users and had to sacrifice their meal expenses for transportation costs. The public transit’s drivers and owners were affected by the crisis as well, mostly by the increasing operational cost and spareparts. Some recommendations are presented to deal with these problems.

Abstract

Jakarta Metropolitan Area, which has more than 20 million inhabitants, should be supported by mass rapid transit system. The Master Plan for MRT development had been initiated more than 20 years ago; since then various studies and plans have been done as well. However, the MET system has not been materialized. One of the reasons is the government‘s limited fund This paper proposes an alternative financing scheme to develop the MRT system, for the government to give concession to private sector for funding and managing development of both MRT and land use along the MART corridor.

Abstract

The Asian crisis shows how Jabotabek‘s previous rapid development is not sustainable. Development based on Jabotabek‘s comparative advantages should be reevaluated. For instance, industrial development relied on high import contents and cheap labor is very vulnerable to the global forces; insensitivity to integrated local community development contributes to social unrest; lack of supporting infrastructure degrades the environment all of this makes Jabotabek less sustainable economically, socially, and environmentally.
