Abstract

Thanksgiving is a prevalent tradition among the Minahasa tribe. It is a tradition carried out in the middle of the year when the harvest season arrives. This tradition is carried out with pure intentions as a form of gratitude to God for blessing the harvest. As time goes by, the implementation of thanksgiving increasingly experiences a shift in meaning. Its implementation is characterized by eating and drinking parties that cost a lot of money. This can cause economic problems in the family. It often causes negative things for young people, and social conflicts can also occur. This research aims to explain and describe the function of pastoral care in preserving religious values in the tradition of thanksgiving in Minahasa. The method used is descriptive qualitative based on phenomenology. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, religious leaders, cultural observers, researchers, and researchers as critical instruments. The research results concluded that the meaning of implementing the tradition of giving thanks has experienced a shift. For this reason, this research recommends that churches create creative and targeted programs to increase understanding and awareness of the people so that the religious values in this tradition will not be lost. The church and government need to work together to hold programs to educate the public.  AbstrakTradisi Pengucapan Syukur adalah tradisi yang sangat populer di suku Minahasa. Abstract

The rapid growth of popular culture presents both challenges and opportunities for churches to conduct worship that remains relevant in the contemporary context. The gap between rigid traditional practices and modern life shaped by popular culture requires churches to find effective ways to communicate faith values. This study analyzes the relationship between worship theology and popular culture and explores how popular culture can strengthen faith without compromising spiritual depth. Using a qualitative, phenomenological-descriptive approach, the research examines the experiences, perceptions, and worship practices of congregations influenced by popular culture. Data were analyzed by identifying key themes and the relationships between worship theology elements—such as meaning, purpose, motivation, and liturgy—and the phenomenon of popular culture. The findings reveal that popular culture serves as a significant bridge between spirituality and modern life, fostering more contextual, interactive, and reflective expressions of faith. Elements such as contemporary music, digital media, and films function as effective means of theological communication and dialogue with daily life. However, churches must manage their use theologically to balance cultural relevance and spiritual depth. Thus, integrating popular culture into worship encourages the development of more inclusive, reflective, and meaningful worship experiences within the dynamics of modern society.
