Abstract

Indonesia, as the world's largest archipelagic state, possesses vast maritime territories, including 3.2 million km2 of territorial waters and a 2.7 million km2 Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The maritime expanse provides diverse marine resources, notably significant salt production potential. Despite its extensive coastline and marine environment, Indonesia's national salt production in 2021 and 2022 fell significantly short of the 4.5 million-ton domestic demand, highlighting a substantial gap in achieving self-sufficiency. This reliance on salt imports poses economic and food security vulnerabilities, prompting the government to enact Presidential Regulation No. 126/2022, aiming to accelerate national salt development.

Abstract

Japan and the Philippines are countries rich in history, culture, and natural wealth closely tied to the sea. Japan has engaged in maritime diplomacy with the Philippines in the realm of security. Maritime security cooperation between the two nations forms the foundation for collaboration in the management of marine resources, cultural exchanges, economics, and maritime security. The objective of this research is to examine the impacts that can result from Japan-Philippines cooperation on Japan's maritime security. This research employs a mixed-methodology to elucidate the scope and impacts stemming from Japan-Philippines cooperation on Japan's maritime security. The research findings demonstrate that the impact of Japan-Philippines cooperation on maritime security provides critical access and plays a vital role in strengthening regional security in the area. Success in achieving assured maritime security conditions has positive effects on Japan in various sectors, especially in the trade sector. This leads to an increase in trust and facilitates smooth trade activities in the maritime region due to guaranteed maritime security. Abstract

The exploration of policies for the conservation of marine biodiversity in the management of natural resources (SDA) in Indonesia emphasizes the urgency of preserving marine biodiversity in the world's largest archipelagic country. Challenges such as illegal fishing, environmental degradation, and a lack of institutional coordination take center stage. With the aim of identifying barriers and opportunities for policy implementation, this study analyzes models of natural resource management using a qualitative approach through literature review. The study focuses on theories of conservation, natural resource management, and international collaboration. The findings highlight the complexity of policy issues and practices in managing marine natural resources, including an evaluation of the "Community-Based Folley Sea Sasi Management" and "Blue Economy Implementation" models. The recommendations put forward involve enhancing supervision, strengthening international collaboration, and implementing advanced technologies. The implications of these findings are expected to support the formulation of more effective policies and efforts to conserve marine biodiversity in Indonesia.

Abstract

Blue carbon ecosystems play a strategic role in mitigating climate change through their ability to absorb and store carbon significantly. However, uncontrolled exploitation of marine resources, such as overfishing, destructive fishing methods, and fishing gear waste, have threatened the sustainability of blue carbon ecosystem. Penangkapan Ikan Terukur (PIT) policies implemented by the Indonesian government aims to realize sustainable fisheries by regulating fishing quotas based on zoning. This reserach aims to identify the urgency of integrating blue carbon ecosystems into PIT policies in Indonesia to maintain the sustainability of marine resources and support climate change mitigation. Using qualitative descriptive methods based on literature studies, this research found that integrating blue carbon ecosystems into PIT policies can provide significant ecological benefits. Strict monitoring, restoration of blue carbon ecosystem habitats, and implementation of scientific data-based policies are needed to ensure the success of this policy. This integration is expected to be able to maintain marine ecosystems, support sustainable fisheries, and contribute to global climate change mitigation targets.

Abstract

This study investigates the geopolitical shifts that have occurred between Iran and the United States over Iran’s nuclear program and how they have impacted the stability of the Middle East region. The background of this study is the long-standing tensions caused by the United States’ suspicions about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. These suspicions triggered the JCPOA agreement in 2015 and worsened after the United States withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018. This study aims to gain an understanding of the ways in which strategic geography, threat perceptions, and foreign policy contribute to instability in the region. This study was conducted qualitatively using a descriptive-analytical approach and secondary data obtained from journals, policy reports, and international institutions. The results show that Iran uses its geographic position and support for non-state actors as strategic tools. While the United States pressures Iran through sanctions and military alliances, it also uses its geographic position. These tensions endanger security and destabilize the region. These results are important because they demonstrate the impact of regional nuclear conflicts around the world and suggest that inclusive multilateral diplomacy is needed to resolve conflicts.
