Abstract

Film Dua Hati Biru (2024) lifts the drama's genre from the story of young women marrying and entering a conflicting reality of life and gender equality. The film forms the discussion room of both audiences and social media users. The study was intended to analyze the audiences' interpretation of the reception of family conflicts in the film, especially women who got married in their teen years. The study uses qualitative research methods with an encoding/decoding model reception approach and is a research phenomenon. Data is collected by conducting in-depth interviews, observations, and relevant library studies. Research shows the use of the Dua Hati Biru (2024) film audience as the dominant-hegemonic position and the dominant position. The dominant use of the audience is illustrated in the scene showing that women who marry young because they 'married by infants' then face conflicts and consequences that leave themselves with the choice to fully care for household or career affairs. Burial in a negotiating position occurred at scenes showing that caring for children and households was the wife's responsibility.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the discourse of historical reconstruction of the 1998 tragedy depicted in the film "Pengepungan di Bukit Duri," amidst the gap in the younger generation's memories of the event. The study employs Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis, encompassing the levels of text, social cognition, and social context. Furthermore, Social Construction Theory and Modes of Reconstrued Realities are also used to support the research. The results show that at the text level, the racist lexicon and visual symbols of the scenes and attributes depicted in the film construct opposition between the majority and the minority, as well as practices of dehumanization. At the social cognition level, the film reflects the ideology of its creator, making it a means of social critique inspired by the 1998 tragedy. At the social context level, the film functions as a medium for the practice of memory politics, shaping commemoration through the social awareness of the younger generation. Theoretically, this research strengthens the relevance of Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis, which examines film as a medium that is not neutral and can be used to convey a certain ideology, and shows how Modes of Reconstructed Realities are processed through the formation of social awareness that is instilled through the social reality displayed in film scenes.

Abstract

Tempo magazine's covers depicting the political battle between Jokowi and Prabowo in the context of the 2019 Presidential Election are worth examining. Not only because in 2019, Jokowi and Prabowo met as rivals who defeated each other for the second time after the 2014 Presidential Election. Using semiotic analysis and media agenda setting theory, this study aims to identify the connotational aspects of the figures of Jokowi and Prabowo in the context of the 2019 Presidential Election on various covers of Tempo magazine. This research highlights the importance of the agenda setting process carried out by the Tempo Magazine Editor in determining the cover of Tempo Magazine in the context of the 2019 presidential election in Indonesia. This study finds that Tempo Magazine’s covers show no bias toward any presidential candidate, positioning Tempo as a neutral observer of the candidates' political behavior. The covers depict a balance of power leading to societal polarization and support divisions. Moreover, the agenda media discourse shows, instead of building opposition, it suggests a political coalition, reflecting the political communication character of Jokowi administration.
