Abstract

The groundwater status of Northwestern Bangladesh is a complex and challenging issue due to its arid and semi-arid climates, increasing population, overexploitation for domestic and irrigation purposes, lack of adequate rainfall, and limited water resources. The study aimed to assess the suitability and health risk of groundwater quality for drinking purposes. A total of one hundred groundwater samples were collected from shallow tubewells in two seasons, the monsoon (MON) and post-monsoon (POM), in northwestern Bangladesh (Ganges River basin) and analyzed using standard methods of analysis (Atomic adsorption spectrometry, UV-visible spectrometry, graphite, ion chromatography). The trends of predominant cations were Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+, and anions were HCO3− > Cl− > SO42− > NO3− > PO43- in both seasons. The dominant cation and anion are Ca2+ and HCO3−, and the water type of the groundwater was Ca-Mg-HCO3. Contamination of trace metals, including Fe, Mn, and Pb, in the groundwater of the study area follows the trend of Fe > Mn > Pb in two seasons. The study observed that the POM showed a higher concentration of trace metals than the MON season. The results indicated that a higher concentration of Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb, as well as the WQI, HMPI, HMEI, and CD posed threats to human health. The quality of the studied samples is poor to undrinkable. The non-carcinogenic risk to human health was not found for both adults and children in both seasons. The study observed that over-extraction, pollution, trace metals, low rainfall, and climate change threaten groundwater quality and availability. The study suggests that groundwater is unfit for human consumption without treatment, particularly for Fe, Mn, and Pb.

Abstract

Child violence is a critical issue within the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, requiring a collaborative approach among agencies for effective management. This study examines the collaborative governance processes implemented by the South Sumatra Provincial Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Agency, the South Sumatra Regional Police, the Class I Palembang Correctional Service, and the Class I Palembang Child Correctional Institution. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this research gathered primary and secondary data through observation, interviews, and documentation. Analysis based on the collaboration process theory by Ansell Gash (2008) indicates that collaborative governance has been effective, characterized by face-to-face dialogue, trust-building, joint commitment, and shared understanding, as well as the achievement of interim results. However, improvements are needed in inter-agency communication and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for handling child violence cases, to strengthen the collaborative process and achieve sustainable outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

Hidden curriculum refers to the beliefs, attitudes, and conduct of students in the classroom, apart from the explicit subject taught in textbooks. This paper has discussed how student participation at Amin Bazar Ideal School in Amin Bazar, Dhaka, has influenced and changed traditional gender norms and expectations. This was motivated by concerns that any subtle support of societal norms and expectations regarding classroom communications, teacher actions, and institutional policies symbolizes conventional gender roles. A quantitative approach was employed to collect data through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations to examine the influence of gender on student participation in academic and extracurricular activities. The findings indicated that the hidden curriculum significantly supported conventional gender roles, with girls being directed toward submissive roles and boys being encouraged toward assertiveness and leadership. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software. The data present hidden biases that need to be addressed to ensure gender equality and a supportive and inclusive educational environment. The figures on student involvement illustrate that 55% of the respondents favor excellent engagement, 11% strongly agree, 44% agree, 38% are undecided, and 7% disagree. Classroom gender participation has no appreciable correlation with socioeconomic level or gender identity according to the Pearson Correlation Coefficient of 0.120.
