Abstract

This study examines the major socio-economic consequences of child labour in North-Eastern Nigeria. It employs multistage sampling techniques to obtain required data from nine selected local government areas in three states of North Eastern Nigeria, namely, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Yobe. Structured questionnaires were administered to 810 children through their household heads in three wards of each local government area selected. The data obtained were analyzed using Tobit Model. The results of the study show that Socio-Economic Consequences of Child Labour comprise Children’s Health, Children’s School Performance, School Dropout, and Poverty, which were found to be statistically significant at varying levels. Therefore, the study recommends necessary actions such as severe punishment for those found involved in child labour activities, serious campaigns and enlightenment on the consequences of child labour, the governments' adequate provision for basic infrastructures and serious campaign from both non-governmental organizations and government on the impact of child labour related activities on nations human capital development in the future.
