Abstract

ne of the imminent programs the government instituted for this concern is the Alternative Learning System (ALS) which aims at providing opportunities for students who are not succeeding in the traditional classroom setting to obtain academic credit, career exploration activities, and extended teacher/peer support in an alternative setting where the ultimate goal is that obtaining a diploma. The study aimed to determine the reading levels of the respondents before and after the administration of a reading intervention program. The Reading program was conceptualized as an extended service to enhance the reading abilities of the ALS students. It employed the descriptive type of research to gather facts and information regarding the reading performance levels of the respondents. The respondents of the study consisted of 70 students from ALS Program of the DepEd ALS Program. The researchers utilized the Functional Literacy Test (FLT) a standardized reading assessment tool which was administered before the intervention and after the reading program. T-test was used in the treatment of the data. Based on the findings; generally, the respondents’ age ranges from 15-23 with a minimal percentage of the ages 42-51. This shows that students tend to stop their education after attending basic education. The mean results of the pre-test which is 4.0294 are far behind the results of the post-test, which is 9.4411 mean, this indicates a highly significant difference is evident in the statistical treatment. A t-value of -29.583 resulted and a p-value of 0.000 was obtained from the data. This proves a high significance is displayed in the results and that the intervention program has proven its effectiveness in the reading performance of the ALS Students.

Abstract

Reading is regarded as a vital skill in attaining proficiency and widening knowledge in different subjects. The research aimed to establish the relationship of reading comprehension to academic performance in Mathematics. The respondents were the freshmen students in specified Math in the Modern World course. This study employed descriptive quantitative design. A researcher-made instrument which underwent experts’ validation and reliability test was used in determining the comprehension level in reading of the respondents. The results specified that positive correlation of reading comprehension and academic performance exists. Based on the results, there exists a highly significant difference between the reading comprehension level of the participants and their academic performance in their math courses. Moreover, with the generated value of .298, it can be inferred that that there is a positive relationship between the variables. This means if one variable increases the other variable moderately increases.

Abstract

English is a critical subject in the Philippines; teachers themselves are also required to pass the English Proficiency Test before practic-ing in public schools. However, there has been a gradual decline in English language proficiency among Filipinos, as evidenced by vari-ous assessments. The study aims to explore the English proficiency of college students at the university in relation to the course Purpos-ive Communication which sought to answer the following ques-tions:1) What is the academic performance in Purposive Communi-cation course of the respondents?; 2) What are the English profi-ciency level test results of the respondents? 3) Is there a significant relationship between the general weighted average in the Purposive Communication course of the respondents and the English profi-ciency level test results of the respondents? The researchers utilized a correlational research design for the study to measure the rela-tionship between independent and dependent variables; it deter-mined that a correlational design was appropriate and beneficial. This phase statistical insights into the relationship between aca-demic performance and English proficiency. The findings contribut-ed to theory generation by shedding light on the role of specific col-lege courses in shaping English proficiency and informing educa-tional policies aimed at enhancing language proficiency among fu-ture teachers.

Abstract

The study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Public Elementary SLM writers in the new normal education who were required to write modules for various subjects in the elementary level and had difficulties in crafting the modules. The researchers made use of a qualitative approach specifically, descriptive phenomenology to understand the personal experiences of the key informants. A semi-structured online interview was conducted with the eleven selected key informants from various schools. The research study used the purposive sampling technique, open-ended questions as instrument, and data collected were analyzed using Colaizzi’s 1978 phenomenological method. Findings show mastery of content, creativity, time management skills, grammar skills, information and communication technology skills, good communication skills and flexibility are the skills needed to possess as a SLM writer. While the challenges and difficulties encountered are lack of training programs for SLM writers, difficulties in making suitable activities for learners, time constraint in writing modules, overlapping responsibilities, lay-outing difficulties, running out of ideas in content delivery, less proficiency in computer literacy. Different coping practices were also identified by collaboration among colleagues, utilizing academic peripheral resources, time management through priorities, devising ways for the improvement of modules content, and SLM writer’s motivation such as children's educational success and professional development success. The evaluators, criteria and common feedback received during evaluation of SLM were identified. SLM Writers addressed the feedback through considering and taking it as constructive ones. Researchers recommended training and webinars about writing modules. Writers should be resourceful to compensate for the shortcomings of their needs and the children.

Abstract

Global changes have changed our educational system from a pandemic to a new normal. Teachers have adopted new learning delivery to cope with the demands of this era. This change has shifted classroom set-up into online classes, requiring teachers to digitize the education process. With this, different issues of coping mechanisms were explored to make learning possible. This study aimed to explore (1) the perceptions of participants in digitizing math teaching, (2) challenges met in digitalization, and (3) the coping mechanisms to address the issues encountered. It made use of the Narrative research design and employed purposive sampling in choosing its participants. Three semi-structured open ended questionnaire were used in gathering data. Results showed that participants viewed teaching math online as difficult and at the same time engaging. The difficulties faced were seen in students' focus on the discussion, lack of gadgets, computation skills, and digital competency. Various coping mechanism were suggested to cope with the difficulties like; utilizing online application, providing helpful activities and having positive attitudes towards the issue. In conclusion, it is found that teaching math online is difficult as compared to face-to-face classes, hence it is recommended that training on the digital competency and technology must be prioritized to further cope up when teaching math online.

Abstract

This research investigates the functional literacy levels of barangay officials in selected agricultural communities within Guagua, Pampanga, aiming to design an extension program that improves governance effectiveness. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study utilizes a modified DepEd-ALS functional literacy test to evaluate reading, writing, and numeracy competencies among 30 elected officials across Ascomo, Pulungmasle, and Maquiapo. The findings reveal a significant gap between academic qualifications and practical literacy skills, with over 36% of respondents classified at the beginning literacy level. This underscores the need for targeted interventions, especially in remote areas with limited access to education. The study contextualizes functional literacy as a pivotal element for public service delivery, transparency, and civic engagement. Results show that while 80% of respondents attained college education, their functional abilities in written communication, budgeting, and digital tasks vary significantly. The proposed extension program is a six-week, module-based training covering reading, writing, numeracy, communication, and digital literacy. Recommendations include integrating technological tools, routine assessments, and peer mentorship to sustain improvements. Ultimately, enhancing functional literacy is framed not just as a personal upgrade for officials, but as a foundational strategy for community empowerment, responsive governance, and sustainable development.
