Abstract

ABSTRAK Tujuan pada penelitian ini ialah untuk menganalisis mengenai makna simbolik pada tradisi pernikahan suku Mandailing. Metode pada penelitian ini ialah menggunakan analissi deskriptif dengan menggunakabn metode pengumpulan data triangulasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini yakni: pada tradisi pernikahan sudah menjadi sebuah ritual di setiap suku kebudayaan Indonesia, salah satunya ialah pada suku batak Mandailing. Suku batak Mandailing merupakan salahsatu bagian dari suku daerah provinsi Sumatera Utara, yang terletak di kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan. Dalam tradisi suku batak Mandailing memiliki beberapa prosesi yang harus dilakukan didalamnya, juga tersirat didalamnya mengenai makna simbol, serta nilai-nilai Islam tentang pernikahan suku batak Mandailing. Islam merupakan agama bersifat Rahmatan lil alamin, agama yang diturunkan untuk menjadi petunjuk bagi manusia dan sebagai rahmat bagi sekalian alam. Pernikahan dalam Islam merupakan ajaran agama guna untuk menjalankan sunnah rasulullah, serta untuk beribadah. Pernikahan suku batak Mandailing ini ialah merupakan suatu ritual kebudayaan bertujuan untuk mempererat tali silaturahmi antar keluarga. Menanggapi tentang prosesi adat pernikahan yang sangat menarik yang dimiliki di dalam suku batak Mandailing. Pernikahan pada suku batak Mandailing merupakan sebuah simbol sebagai bentuk pencurahan rasa syukur pada Allah yang maha esa, serta ucapan doa harapan untuk kedua mempelai, penyampaian pesan nasehat untuk bekal dalam mengarungi kehidupan yang baru. Kata kunci: Makna, Simbol, Pernikahan, Suku Batak Mandailing ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to analyze the symbolic meaning of the Mandailing tribe's wedding traditions. The method in this research is to use descriptive analysis using triangulation data collection methods. The results of this research are: the tradition of marriage has become a ritual in every Indonesian cultural tribe, one of which is the Mandailing Batak tribe. The Mandailing Batak tribe is a part of the regional tribes of North Sumatra province, which is located in South Tapanuli district. In the tradition of the Mandailing Batak tribe, there are several processions that must be carried out in it, it also contains the meaning of symbols and Islamic values regarding weddings of the Mandailing Batak tribe. Islam is a religion that is Rahmatan lil a'lamin, a religion that was revealed to be a guide for humans and a blessing for all nature. Marriage in Islam is a religious teaching to carry out the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as to worship. The Mandailing Batak tribe wedding is a cultural ritual aimed at strengthening ties between families. Responding to the very interesting traditional wedding procession that the Mandailing Batak tribe has. Marriage in the Mandailing Batak tribe is a symbol as a form of expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah, as well as saying prayers of hope for the bride and groom, conveying messages of advice to provide provisions for navigating a new life. Abstract

This study aims to explore the transcendental ethical dimension in the Sufi tradition through a philosophical examination of two key concepts: zuhud (asceticism, spirituality) and tazkiyah al-nafs (purification of the soul). This research is motivated by the phenomenon of contemporary life characterized by materialism, consumerism, and digital disruption that often erode human spiritual values. Instant lifestyles, an orientation towards instant gratification, and the increasing moral crisis indicate an urgent need to reintroduce transcendental values as a counterbalance. In this context, the concepts of zuhud and tazkiyah an-nafs in the treasury of Islamic Sufism are considered relevant for philosophical study. This article uses an Islamic philosophical approach and hermeneutic analysis. This research highlights the relevance of Sufi spiritual values ​​in addressing the ethical and spiritual crises that plague contemporary life. The concept of asceticism in Sufism is not merely understood as a rejection of the world, but also as a form of inner discipline that balances human relations with God and the world. Meanwhile, tazkiyah an-nafs serves as a foundation for ethical transformation, emphasizing self-honesty, controlling desires, and purifying life's orientation. In a modern context characterized by hedonism, consumerism, and existential alienation, these values ​​offer an alternative paradigm for building a holistic self-awareness and a life ethic oriented toward spiritual depth. This study concludes that transcendental ethics in Sufism can function as both cultural critique and a moral foundation for facing the challenges of humanity in the present era.

Abstract

The existence of hermeneutics that emerged into the world of interpretation of the qur’an has given many different influences to muslim scholars around the world. Hermeneutics is considered to be able to reveal the meaning of the other side of the previous interpretation. Initially, the use of hermeneutics was only used to understand the bible. Previously, hermeneuticz in understanding the qur’an was consideres something that could not to be tolerated because of its existence. This article contains the interpretation of thr qur’an surah an Nisa 11 and 12 contains the distribution of inheritance for sons and daughters in Islam. Substantially contained five things discussed in the verse, namely, rationalization related to differences in the inheritance of men and women, the inheritance of children, the inheritance of parents, the time of division, and the lesson. This study uses qualitative research using Jorge J.E’s hermeneutic approach. Gracia in her book entitled A Theory Of Textuality.

Abstract

This article examines the historical process of the spread of Islam and the dynamics of the formation of social identity in the coastal areas of North Sumatra, with a focus on how Islamic preaching, cultural acculturation, and social interactions shaped the region's distinctive religious and social character. The coastal areas of North Sumatra, including areas such as Barus, Sibolga, and Tapanuli, have held a strategic position as international trade hubs from the 7th century until the colonial period. It was through this trade route that Islam was first introduced by Arab, Persian, and Gujarati traders, which were then disseminated further by Islamic scholars and local figures through a cultural and social preaching approach. This study uses a social and cultural history approach with a descriptive qualitative method, combining literature studies, colonial records, local manuscripts, and interviews with community leaders in the coastal areas. The results show that Islamic preaching in this region did not take place in a confrontational manner, but rather with an accommodative approach that emphasized the integration of Islamic values into the local cultural order. This process resulted in acculturation that is evident in social traditions such as traditional ceremonies, arts, religious language, and the community's moral value system. In this context, Islam serves as a multi-layered source of social identity formation: as a religious, cultural, and social identity closely intertwined with local traditions. During the colonial period, the dynamics of social identity underwent significant shifts with the introduction of Western education systems, colonial bureaucracy, and the flow of modernization. Theoretically, this article asserts that the process of Islamization in coastal North Sumatra cannot be understood simply as the spread of religion, but as a socio-historical process that shapes the construction of collective identity.Keywords: Spread of Islam, Social Identity, Islamization of Coastal North Sumatra[Artikel ini mengkaji proses sejarah penyebaran Islam dan dinamika pembentukan identitas sosial masyarakat di wilayah pesisir Sumatera Utara, dengan fokus pada bagaimana dakwah Islam, akulturasi budaya, dan interaksi sosial membentuk karakter keagamaan an sosial yang khas di kawasan tersebut. Wilayah pesisir Sumatera Utara meliputi daerah seperti Barus, Sibolga, dan Tapanuli memiliki posisi strategis sebagai simpul perdagangan internasional sejak abad ke-7 hingga masa kolonial. Melalui jalur perdagangan inilah Islam pertama kali diperkenalkan oleh para pedagang Arab, Persia, dan Gujarat, yang kemudian disebarluaskan lebih jauh oleh ulama dan tokoh lokal melalui pendekatan dakwah kultural dan sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan sejarah sosial dan kultural dengan metode kualitatif deskriptif, menggabungkan studi literatur, catatan kolonial, naskah lokal, dan wawancara dengan tokoh masyarakat di wilayah pesisir. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dakwah Islam di wilayah ini tidak disebarkan secara konfrontatif, melainkan dengan pendekatan akomodatif yang menekankan integrasi nilai-nilai Islam ke dalam tatanan budaya lokal. Proses ini menghasilkan akulturasi yang tampak dalam tradisi sosial seperti upacara adat, kesenian, bahasa keagamaan, dan sistem nilai moral masyarakat. Dalam konteks ini, Islam menjadi sumber pembentukan identitas sosial yang berlapis: sebagai identitas religius, budaya, dan sosial yang terjalin erat dengan tradisi lokal. Pada masa kolonial, dinamika identitas sosial mengalami pergeseran signifikan seiring masuknya sistem pendidikan Barat, birokrasi kolonial, dan arus modernisasi. Secara teoritis, artikel ini menegaskan bahwa proses Islamisasi di pesisir Sumatera Utara tidak dapat dipahami hanya sebagai penyebaran agama, tetapi sebagai proses sosial-historis yang membentuk konstruksi identitas kolektif.]Kata Kunci: Penyebaran Islam, Identitas Sosial, Islamisasi Pesisir Sumatera Utara.
