Abstract

The inspection tool commonly used during the manufacture and acceptance testing of new machine tools or repair of old machine tools is the test bar. The test bar is a mandrel for calibration aids representing an axis to be checked within a given value, either for run-out or for location (position and orientation) in relation to other machine components. Conditions and performance on the precision of the machine will affect the products produced from the production process. Thus, the use of a test bar for the precision of a machine tool is carried out through a calibration process. At present, the need for test bars for the machine tool calibration process in Indonesia is a product imported from outside (imported), even though the manufacture of test bars allows it to be done independently. In this study, the between centre test bar was redesigned and made based on ISO 230-11 standards with the subject of examination for the straightness of the sledding movement in the horizontal and vertical planes referring to and DIN 8605. The stages of making the between-centre test bar include turning, heat treatment, cylinder grinding, and measurement. The accuracy of the geometry, such as the alignment of the diameter between-centre test bar is carried out using a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) machine. Furthermore, the between-centre test bar is tested on a universal lathe to determine its feasibility through the process of checking the alignment of the spindle axis with the machine table in the vertical and horizontal directions (calibration).

Abstract

A test bar is a tool that represents an axis whose position will be tested relative to other machine elements as well as the movement of the axis relative to its own position. With a test bar as a precision tool, the deviation value of a machine's geometry can be determined. In the initial stages of making the spindle test bar, namely determining the design according to ISO 230-1:1996 standards, machine testing tools books and directly observing the Aciera F3 Milling Machine. The stages of making a test bar spindle consist of several machining processes such as the lathe process, heat treatment and grinding process, quality checking, and testing. The results of the quality check showed that there were 4 actual dimensions within the tolerance limits and 3 other actual dimensions had sizes outside the tolerance limits, but sizes outside these limits had no effect on the function of the workpiece being made, so this calibration tool could still be used. For testing the spindle test bar on the Aciera F3 Milling Machine object, there were deviations in eccentricity and parallelism with the transverse direction table of 0.030 mm and 0.011 mm, respectively.

Abstract

The increasing demand for high-speed, precision machinery has highlighted the limitations of conventional friction and anti-friction bearings, driving the need for more advanced bearing technologies, such as air bearings. However, achieving competency and skills related to air bearing components is difficult to access, particularly radial air bearing rigs. This paper presents the design of a radial air bearing rig as a learning tool to support educational objectives in understanding the working principles, use, and maintenance requirements of air bearing systems. The design stages use the VDI 2222 methodology and utilize SolidWorks for modeling. Air quality specifications refer to the ISO 9001:2015 – New Way Air Bearings standards, which consist of a fly height of 5μm, with operational parameters of 4–6 Bar input pressure and 2–13 LPM flow rate. The rig uses a single-phase motor for shaft rotation and a porous pad for air distribution. The test results show that the rig achieves a fly height of 0.5 μm at 4 Bar pressure and 5 LPM flow rate, although its rotation exhibits resistance. These outcomes confirm the rig’s potential as an educational tool and highlight the need for mechanical improvements to enhance its performance.
