Abstract

ABSTRACT This article discusses the function and meaning of mosque calligra-phy in one of the Minangkabau regions, whose application changes its essential function and meaning because the mosque calligraphy was applied in line with the religious and cultural conditions of the people. The purpose of this research is to describe the function and meaning of the locality of the calligraphy of the community mosque in Padang Pariaman, one of the Minangkabau areas. Qualitative research design was employed, and the data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The study found that calligraphy in mosques has function to not only beautifyingthe mosque, but also distinguishingMuslim houses of worship from other buildings,so that people do not make mistakes in writing. In addition, as a symbolof the religious identity of the mosque congregation, thewritten sentences symbolizing their religious understandingwere not always understood properly. Some community membersusedcalligraphies as amulet to cast away misfortune by putting them on the front door or main window of the mosque. This assumption occurs because they understand and interpret every Arabic letter as the art of calligraphy. The stylization or indentation of the Arabic letters determines the beauty of calligraphy writing. Therefore, the mosque's calligraphy is formed with functions and meanings that are patterned in line with the religious and cultural forms of the people. Keywords: Islam in Archipelago, Kelantan, Little Mecca, Malay. Abstract

Batalam is one of the traditions that is still carried out by the people of Koto Baru Village, Payakumbuh, West Sumatra. Over time, talam continues to change, especially in terms of the use of materials. The purpose of this research is to analyze the changes that have occurred in the batalam tradition in Koto Baru, and to analyze the meaning of the batalam tradition for the local community. This research uses historical research methods. The steps in the historical research method used in this research are heuristics, source criticism, synthesis and writing or historiography.  The results of this study indicate that since before 1942, there has been a significant change from the batalam tradition, previously the community used katidiang tunggak, while after 1942, it began to switch to talam or dulang. Until the 1990s, there was no longer a change in shape, but only a change in the material of the talam, from previously made of brass to aluminum, besides that there was also a change in the material of the cup which was originally made of glass to plastic. Despite the change in materials, the value contained in this tradition is still the same, which is related to symbols of togetherness, respect, and closeness.

Abstract

This qualitative literature review explores the intersection of the history of Islamic education and the digital identity of Minangkabau adolescents, with a particular focus on their use of social media. Islamic education has long been a cornerstone of cultural and social identity in Minangkabau society, deeply influencing the moral, religious, and social values of its people. Over time, the integration of modern technological platforms, particularly social media, has significantly transformed how Minangkabau adolescents engage with their cultural heritage and religious education. This study applies an anthropological lens to understand how these adolescents navigate their digital identities, balancing traditional Islamic values with contemporary digital influences. By reviewing existing literature on Islamic education, digital culture, and identity formation, this research highlights the challenges and opportunities faced by young Minangkabau in maintaining cultural authenticity while participating in globalized online spaces. The findings underscore the dual role of social media as both a platform for cultural expression and a space for generational tension, where traditional values often clash with modern, global digital trends. This study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the evolving relationship between cultural heritage, religious education, and the digital world for indigenous adolescents, offering insights into the broader impacts of digitalization on youth identity formation in post-colonial, Muslim-majority societies.
