Abstract

cArsh, in relation to Allah, is one of the issues generating diverse views among scholars of different blocs in Islam. This is because it is mysterious. The Salafiyyah enclave is one of the key actors whenever topics relating to the Being of Allah and His CArsh came up for discussion. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the various submissions of the Salafiyyah scholars on cArsh to bring out the disparities and their implications. The interpretive method is adopted for proper and adequate assessment of related issues. The findings of this paper revealed that there is no common ground among the Salafiyyah when it comes to cArsh and the Being of Allah and that it constitutes part of Mutashābihāt (allegorical issues) that Q.3:7 directed the Muslims to keep off discussions on them. It also revealed that some Salafiyyah scholars are equally guilty of anthropomorphism and have accused many scholars of other blocs. The paper, therefore, concluded that Tafwīḍ ’l-Macnā wan-Nafyyu ’l-Kayf (abstinence from explanation and negation of likeness) is what the Salaf and majority of the scholars held on to and advocated, either in relation to cArsh or allegorical issues in Islam. It is therefore recommended that contemporary Muslims should limit themselves to what is stated in both the Qur’ān and authentic ḥadīth with regards to Mutashābihāt without explaining their modality or rejection of them.

Abstract

Shàré is an ancient Igbomina town in Kwara State, Nigeria. The town, which Muslims populate, features many Islamic practices. This makes it different from other communities in Igbominaland. Right from the second Olupako (king), the traditional heads of the town adorned themselves in turban instead of crowns as common to Yoruba Obas. This indicates their attachment to Islam. Some of the traditions of the community are embedded in Islamic values and practices. For instance, the popular December and New Year celebrations, held in high esteem in different towns, cities and villages, are nothing to write home about in Shàré. What is celebrated in the town by all and sundry is CĪdu ’l-Adhā. This paper considered it necessary to investigate the factors responsible for the wide acceptance of Islam in the town to determine what is needed to sustain the tempo in the future. The historical method is adopted to collate relevant materials critical to achieving this paper's objectives. The findings revealed that Islam got to Shàré during the reign of the second Olupako, who accepted the religion. This prepared the ground for drastic Islamic developments in the town. It is also discovered that until now, Muslims are still proactive in sustaining the influence of Islam. However, several challenges need attention to secure Islam's future in the community. Attentions are therefore called to those challenges in this paper for necessary measures to address them.

Abstract

Sufism has been trailed by different criticisms for a long period. Different Muslim communities across the Muslim world have experienced anti-Sufism drives but launched in Nigeria in the seventies as it was inaugurated and coordinated by Shaykh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, who acted under the guise and influence of Wahhābiyya-Salafiyya. As a result, Sufis across communities started responding by either preaching or writing. Sufi scholars in Ilorin, a border community between the North and South, were among the early responders to anti-Sufism who took to writing. Therefore, this paper is a critical analysis of the contents of Rafḍ al-Shubuhāt, written as a response to anti-Sufi waves in the city. An exegetical method of research was adopted to determine the appropriateness of the Sufi scholars to the anti-Sufism campaign in the metropolis. The findings revealed that most of the Salafiyya’s claims are unfounded and lack the proof to establish their genuineness, while the responses of the Sufi are not only appropriate but are also laced with evidence from the Qur’an, Ḥadīth, and submissions of different scholars, some of whom were Salafiyya scholars. The book is therefore recommended for the defence of Sufism in contemporary times.Contribution: This study contributes to revealing the efforts to tackle the anti-Sufism movement initiated by Sufis scholars in Ilorin Nigeria, by writing a book entitled Rafḍ al-Shubuhāt, as a counter-opinion.

Abstract

Sufism is shrouded with many polemics which keep thickened by the day. The gap between the anti and pro-Sufi scholars continues to widen with time. As the former scholars intensified efforts to discredit Sufism, the latter strengthened moves to consolidate it in Islam. One of the scholars both sides relied on in their discussions is Ibn Al-Jawzī. Talbīs Iblīs, which forms the kernel of discussions in this paper, is one of his works on Sufism. It is often said that the work is an attack on Sufism, but the Sufis denied this, stating that it is just an appraisal of different groups that make up Islam. The effort here is to critique various mystical themes in the work vis-à-vis Sufis’ renditions to determine their level of correlation or otherwise. Historical and exegetical methods are adopted. The former availed the opportunity to dig into relevant historical facts, while the latter assisted in analyzing his submissions on Sufism. It is discovered that Ibn Al-Jawzī was not particular about Sufism, but all groups of Muslims identified how Iblīs deluded each. Also, he did not entirely condemn Sufism but considered some doctrines and practices strange therein. His submissions were guided by his little practice of Sufism and observations of Sufis of his time. The paper concluded that Ibn Al-Jawzī's effort is not different from Ahmad Ibn Hanbalī's among his precursors and Ibn Taymiyyah among his successors.               Keywords: cAqīdah, Iblīs, Ibn Al-Jawzī, Sufism, Raqṣ, Zuhd

Abstract

This paper delves into the discourse surrounding traditional Islamic greetings, specifically focusing on the viewpoints of Salafi scholars regarding the practices of kneeling and bending as manners of greeting in Islam. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of primary sources, classical texts, and contemporary scholarly works, this study critically examines the arguments and interpretations presented by Salafiyyah scholars. It investigates the theological, cultural, and historical contexts shaping their perspectives on the appropriateness and religious significance of these greetings. Furthermore, the paper explores the implications of these viewpoints within the broader Islamic community and discusses potential avenues for inter-sectarian dialogue and understanding. By engaging with diverse scholarly viewpoints and contextualizing them within broader Islamic teachings, this analysis contributes to a nuanced understanding of greeting etiquettes in Islam and facilitates constructive discourse within the global Muslim community.

Abstract

Ḥadīth, as the second primary source of Islam, is shrouded in many issues. Its application among the Sufis has attracted an array of attention. This is because they (Sufis) appear not to be in absolute compliance with the conventional methods of ḥadīth narration, authentication and application as put in place by Muḥaddithūn and widely used by scholars, especially the Salafiyyah. This study examines the Sufis’ approach to the usage and application of ḥadīth, especially their adherence to the rules of ḥadīth authentication. The analytical method of research is adopted in this study. It avails the opportunity to analyze various texts and scholars’ submissions on the science of ḥadīth as related to this study. It is discovered from this study that the Sufis, in most of their applications of ḥadīth, downplayed the rules as set by Muḥaddithūn due to their belief that the Prophet is still alive, even after his demise, and that direct link or connection with him is possible. So, they do not need stringent conditions to establish a report from the Prophet or act on it. It is also discovered that the bulk of narrations at the Sufis’ disposal are considered to be of weak or fabricated status. However, ḥadīth of the weak category can still be applicable in the realm of meritorious acts (faḍā’il), according to majority of the scholars. It is also discovered that some Sufis hold that as long as a particular narration does not contradict the principles of Islam, ascribing such to the Prophet should be less controversial. This s, therefore, concluded that Sufis flouted the rules of ḥadīth authentication with good intentions and attached importance to their propositions to make them gain wider acceptance from the people.

Abstract

Relics of holy people have been attractive among Muslims of all generations due to their mundane and spiritual importance. Sufi scholars are, especially, notable for their particular interest in relics, which form an integral part of their beliefs and practices. They venerate relics through which they seek blessing (tabāruk) and intercession (tawāṣul), among others. Meanwhile, the modern Salafi scholars criticized the Sufis’ perspective on relics, claiming that their actions constitute bid’ah (innovation), kufr (infidelity), and syirk (associating partners with Allah). This paper, therefore, examined the modern Salafis’ criticism of the religious attitudes of the Sufis on relics. It adopted both historical and exegetical methods to achieve the set objectives. It has been discovered that relics have spiritual values, and Muslims of all generations, especially the companions (ṣahābah), have used them for different spiritual purposes. It is also clear that both the Salafis and Sufis venerate and seek blessing from the relics, though Sufis are more prominent in the practice. The paper identified excessiveness and arbitrariness in the disposition of the Sufis to the relics, which engendered deification of them as the yardstick for the Salafis’ criticisms. Therefore, it concluded that advocacy for the desecration of relics on the part of modern Salafi scholars lacks merits. Instead, machinery to checkmate arbitrariness should be advocated for.

Abstract

AbstractThe twin fields of Arabic and Islamic Studies play a critical role in advancing the understanding and practice of Islam among Muslims. Informal learning of these subjects had taken place in Nigeria for centuries before their incorporation into the country's curriculum. Despite the daunting challenges, some indigenous individuals dedicated themselves to bringing these courses to a prestigious level, pioneering their study, and teaching them across schools in the country. However, these quintessential personalities still need due recognition through adequate dissemination of information about their lives and works. One of these pioneers was Professor Musa Oladipupo Ajilogba Abdul, Nigeria's first indigenous Professor of Islamic Studies, who taught and authored many works to simplify the teaching and understanding of Islam for Nigerians. The objective of this paper is to evaluate his activities and to shed light on his enduring legacy, mainly through his former students, mentees, and those scholars who pass through his former students. Using a historical method, the research gathered information through interviews and available library materials. The findings revealed that Prof. M.O.A. Abdul was an iconic academic with an everlasting legacy that is difficult to match. His former students are leading Islamic Studies scholars in Nigeria and beyond, exhibiting his teachings and principles. The paper concluded by recommending a revivalist approach to make Prof. M.O.A. Abdul more relevant in learning Islamic Studies in Nigeria by reproducing his works and domesticating his philosophy by his students and grand-students. Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa Prof. M.O.A.
