Abstract

Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) is a herbaceous plant from Southeast Asia, traditionally used as herbal medicine by local people due to its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. Despite its various benefits, this plant has struggled to enter the market because it has not been cultivated on a large scale. Therefore, the opportunity for commercial cultivation of this plant remains wide open. Tuban Regency is a potential agricultural district in Java, strategically positioned on the main road between Central Java Province and East Java Province. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on land suitability evaluation in Tuban Regency’s agricultural areas. This research aimed to evaluate land suitability for torch ginger cultivation in Tuban Regency. Based on the studies conducted, agricultural land in Tuban Regency is quite fertile, but adequate irrigation is necessary to help the plants survive during the dry season. Torch ginger naturally grows in densely vegetated areas with sufficient water availability. Therefore, cultivating torch ginger in Tuban requires several special treatments, such as maintaining water availability, providing shade and mulch to regulate temperature and humidity, applying phosphorus and organic fertilizers to address phosphorus fixation in limestone soil, and using growth regulators like paclobutrazol to overcome flowering inhibition. From the various literature that has been studied, it was found that the land in the Northern Limestone Mountains of Tuban Regency, is quite fertile and suitable for agricultural land.

(pp. 48–58).  Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).Lead (Pb) is one of common heavy metal pollutant that produced from human activities. Lead pollution produced from fuel, mining activities, fertilizer, pesticides application, and industrial activities that contribute to urban pollution level. Lead concentration in soil cause health problems such as digestive disorders, kidney disease, anemia, and decrease of intelligent quotient (IQ) score. High concentration of blood lead level caused negative health impacts such as increase of cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, blood anemia, loss of vision, and  bones impair development. Recent science development has given us several alternatives to reduce lead contamination in water and soil, one of which is phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is a process of soil and water decontamination from hazardous substances with plants. Ornamental plants become alternative method of lead phytoremediation because it is unconsumed by human and animals as well as served decorative function. In this paper, various ornamental plant species that show a high capacity to tolerate, accumulate, and improve contaminated soil of lead will be described. Plants with lead phytoremediaton abilities could become solution for urban green space utilization in Indonesia. The purpose of this paper was to determine the types of ornamental plants that can be used as phytoremediators for lead (Pb) contamination in urban areas and to determine the mechanism process.

Abstract

Modernization has an impact on increasing public literacy about the importance of food products that are safer for health. In addition, the society has also been aware of the dangers of pesticides and other chemical products used in agricultural businesses that can pollute the environment and disturb the balance of nature. Writing this review aims to describe the positive impact of organic farming on natural balance and food security and to formulate policy recommendations that can be made to expand the range of application of organic farming methods. From the various journals that have been reviewed, the results show that organic farming requires lower inputs and energy than conventional farming. In addition, the diversity of organisms in organic cultivation systems is also more abundant, so that the impact will be more positive for maintaining the balance of nature. The application of organic cultivation systems has also been proven to produce food products that are safer for consumption and more economically profitable for farmers. Therefore, efforts to implement an organic crop cultivation system are important to be carried out with the support of all component of society.
