Abstract

The text emphasizes the significance of enhancing writing skills among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students through active learning and meaningful engagement, advocating for a student-centered approach that fosters idea development through discussion and writing. It highlights the challenges faced by Grade 11 EFL students at Singapore School Medan, particularly regarding grammar mastery and practice opportunities, revealing that while 62% of students exhibit good writing skills, a notable portion struggles due to limited engagement and reluctance to communicate in English. The study suggests utilizing news media and guided practice to boost motivation and creativity, ultimately calling for more effective teaching strategies to improve writing outcomes. The sample of this study is 15 students. The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of study. To collect used the Semi-structure interview is a form of Interview. The finding of this research showed that in pre-test, the students got mean score 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6. In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized moderate. In post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized good. Topic writing skills in EFL students by providing one learning topic makes students active to construct meaning, text, dialogue, experience, in expressing his idea clearly at SMA Singapore School Medan

Abstract

Speaking is one way that people can communicate with each other. Speaking is the medium of transaction between speaker and listener. The objectives of this research are 1) to find out the implementation of High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) integrated with the Tiktok Application, and 2) to know the students’ responses toward the implementation of HOTS with the integration of Tiktok Application. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted by integrating High Order Thinking Skills with Tiktok Application to the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Alasa. The sample of this research is the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Alasa in the Academic Year 2023/2024. The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score on speaking skills in, the pre-test was 61.7, in the second cycle the mean score was 70.4, in the last cycle the mean score was 82.6. It showed that there is a significant mean improvement among cycles. The result of this research also shows that the students’ responses after being taught by using High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and TikTok applications are positive. It is suggested that teachers use the TikTok Application as an alternative to teaching speaking skills to the students in Senior High School to improve students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to find and explain English teachers’ strategies used in teaching English as a foreign language. The types of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were students of SMK Negeri 2 Pulau-Pulau Batu majoring in ULP (Usaha Perjalanan Wisata) which consists of 37 students and two English teachers who taught in different classes with the same major. Moreover, the researcher collect the data by using the instruments of the study. Instrument used is survey questionnaires consisting of open-ended and close-ended questionnaires. In addition, the researcher interviews both teachers and students also. The result of this study showed that the teachers used some strategies in teaching English as a foreign language. Teaching strategies used by the teachers such as discussion, small-group work, co-operative learning, and role play. Besides of that, teachers used other strategy to accommodate students’ interest in learning English as foreign language such as using PPT, films, music, cards, poster and other interesting media.
