Abstract

Since school gardens are located within the school grounds, the school garden provides an accessible learning environment outside the classroom. On the other hand, school gardens are hard to manage due to limited funding and staff. This study introduced STEM to school garden management using a project-based learning strategy. Participants in this study were nine students of sixth grade who were members of the Green Community extracurricular. Students participated in four stages of school garden STEM project: identify problem and context, background knowledge, problem-solving, and communication for the school garden maintenance. For data acquisition, field notes and photos were collected as observation during a period of twelve weeks of lesson. The result showed that students can actively contribute to the development of the school garden. Collaboration between students, teachers, staff, and the school is required to make the school garden sustainable and produce the best possible outcomes for improvement. The research findings suggest that the school garden can serve as a model for contextual problem-based learning that arises in students' immediate surroundings.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to improve biology teachers’ ability to design ethnoscience-based learning to support the concept of sustainability. Research methodology: The training used the lesson study (plan-do-see) activity pattern. The activity was carried out in four meetings (three online and one offline) held from July to September 2024. Learning was implemented at one of the SMA N in Singaparna, Tasikmalaya, West Java. Results: The results of this training activity show that the teaching modules prepared by teachers by integrating local wisdom or potential with biology materials can be carried out by 93.5% (very good). The results of the questionnaire show that 100% of teachers consider the integration of local wisdom/local potential into biology material important, because it can increase students' understanding of concepts (100%) and can increase character values and student sustainability (100%). For teachers, learning based on local wisdom adds insight into innovative learning and becomes more sensitive to recognizing the local wisdom/potential of their region (92.7%). Conclusions: Biology teachers successfully designed ethnoscience-based learning modules to support sustainability, as demonstrated by the production of eight teaching modules and their effective classroom implementation (93.5%). Teachers responded positively, with 92.3% becoming more aware of local wisdom and 100% agreeing that it enhances character and sustainability values. Limitations: Student response data were not taken, even though it was necessary to confirm the results of teachers' responses to ethnoscience-based learning. Contribution: Improve teachers' ability to design ethnoscience-based teaching materials, improve students' understanding of concepts, and shape students' character values and sustainability.

Abstract

Scientific writing menunjukkan pemikiran kritis dan pemahaman mahasiswa terhadap suatu permasalahan melalui bentuk tulisan. Scientific writing dalam topik morfologi tumbuhan digunakan sebagai media untuk melatihkan pemikiran kritis mahasiswa Pendidikan Biologi dalam menganalisis hasil pengamatan struktur tumbuhan. Pemahaman pada karakteristik tumbuhan umumnya diamati pada kemampuan mahasiswa dalam merepresentasikan gambar tumbuhan. Akan tetapi, penelitian terhadap pemikiran kritis mahasiswa dalam menganalisis morfologi tumbuhan juga diperlukan sebagai sarana untuk meningkatkan literasi botani. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pemikiran kritis mahasiswa melalui scientific writing pada topik morfologi tumbuhan. Mahasiswa bekerja dalam kelompok (4-5 mahasiswa per kelompok) untuk merancang observasi lapangan berdasarkan bagian tumbuhan yang diamati, yaitu batang, daun, bunga, atau buah. Setelah melakukan identifikasi, mahasiswa menyusun interpretasi hasil pengamatan dalam bentuk tulisan ilmiah yang terdiri dari pendahuluan, metode, hasil, pembahasan, dan kesimpulan. Penilaian scientific writing menggunakan rubrik yang mengukur keterampilan berpikir kritis yang terdiri atas lima kategori, yaitu pemahaman, penerapan, transformasi, analisis, dan sintesis. Setiap kategori diinterpretasikan berdasarkan skala Likert 4-tingkat. Secara keseluruhan, sebanyak 62,5% keterampilan berpikir mahasiswa memenuhi ekspektasi, sementara 37,5% masih dalam tahap pengembangan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa scientific writing dapat digunakan sebagai media untuk melatihkan keterampilan berpikir kritis mahasiswa.

Abstract

Proyek kerja lapangan ekologi memberikan kesempatan pada mahasiswa untuk melakukan praktik keterampilan proses ilmiah, yaitu berpikir kritis dan memproses informasi dengan melakukan penelitian dan menulis laporan. Penulisan laporan hasil pengamatan di lapangan dapat mengonstruksi keterampilan proses ilmiah mahasiswa dengan membuat generalisasi berdasarkan data. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi keterampilan berpikir kritis dan self-efficacy (tingkat keyakinan terhadap pengerjaan tugas yang dilakukan) mahasiswa pendidikan biologi dalam menulis laporan kerja lapangan ekologi. Mahasiswa melakukan penelitian lapangan pada empat topik ekologi, di antaranya klimatik, akuatik, edafik, dan populasi. Mahasiswa menggunakan data yang didapat dari lapangan untuk dibuat visualisasi dan dianalisis hasilnya yang kemudian dituangkan dalam laporan (tulisan ilmiah). Tingkat keyakinan mahasiswa terhadap laporan yang dibuat dijaring menggunakan kuesioner. Dikusi mengenai implikasi terhadap instruksi dan desain proyek kerja lapangan ekologi menjadi penting untuk meningkatkan keterampilan literasi data dalam penulisan ilmiah.
