Abstract

This research analyzes the use of figurative language in Dave Chappelle's standup comedy special "Sticks & Stones." The issue addressed is how Chappelle employs various forms of figurative. The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the types of figurative language used and understand how these techniques affect the messages conveyed and the audience's response. The research method used is qualitative text analysis, where transcripts of the comedy special are analyzed to identify metaphors, similes, irony, hyperbole, personification, metonymy. Data were collected through direct observation of the performance and related literature analysis to support the findings. The findings of the study show that Chappelle consistently uses figurative language, as well as to add deeper layers of humor to his material. Metaphors and irony emerge as the main tools used to highlight absurdities and injustices in issues such as cancel culture, identity politics, and freedom of speech. These results indicate that figurative language not only functions as a rhetorical tool but also as a mechanism to invite the audience to think critically about the issues raised. This research contributes to the development of knowledge by adding insights into the role of figurative language in standup comedy. It also expands the understanding of how comedians like Chappelle can use language techniques to influence public perception and encourage social dialogue. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method because as a whole it explains how the process of sign formation and the meaning of the sign is carried out through a semantic approach. The results of this study indicate that the color, shape and also the naming of a symbol are things that have been determined and produced from every human perspective based on reality. Based on this research, it can be concluded that every symbol that is formed based on color, shape and also a word has a meaning according to each person's perspective. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how conceptual metaphors are used by SZA in her song lyrics. Finding the source domain and target domain of the conceptual metaphors used in song lyrics is the main goal of this study. A descriptive qualitative research approach is used, which includes semantic analysis and conceptual metaphor mapping in song lyrics. The information used consists of five well-known SZA songs that were specifically chosen. The author defines conceptual metaphors in 5 lyrics from SZA's song. In the “Kill Bill” song there is 1 conceptual metaphor, in the “Snooze” song there are 2 conceptual metaphors, in the “The Weekend” song there 3 conceptual metaphors, in the “Nobody Gets Me” song there are 4 conceptual metaphors, and in the “Open Arms” song there is 1 conceptual metaphor. The research provides our understanding of how conceptual metaphor is used in song lyrics and shows the depth of creativity and artistic expression found in SZA's songs. The findings of this study may be helpful for future semantics and cultural studies research, as well as for developing a deeper understanding of both the complexity and the beauty of SZA's song lyrics.
