Abstract

In this community service, the problem at the English Academy Bengkulu Malaysia (EABM) was the low quality of grammar among Indonesian migrant workers. In addition, an asset developed to address the above problem was the individual asset in the form of instructors because instructors have a crucial role in improving the quality of grammar learning. This community service aimed to enhance the quality of grammar among Indonesian migrant workers by improving instructor competence. The method used in this community service was ABCD (Asset-Based Community-Driven Development) employing two stages, namely: first, asset mapping using community mapping, and second, asset selection using low hanging fruit scale. The results of this community service were: (1) the preparation stage which includes problem discovery, asset mapping, asset determination, and determination of community service programs. (2) the implementation stage which includes strengthening active learning methodologies for instructors and using songs as a learning medium. (3) the monitoring stage to assess the success of the program, with success indicated by improved grammar competence of participants during speaking sessions in the learning material preview.

Abstract

Indonesian migrant workers in Penang, Malaysia, face significant challenges in acquiring English speaking skills, primarily due to their lack of self-confidence, limited speaking skill, and insufficient opportunities for practice. This research examines the application of the scaffolding method by teachers to bridge the gap between learners’ current skills and their potential for growth in English speaking proficiency. Specifically, it analyzes the use of scaffolding in teaching speaking skills to Indonesian migrant workers at the English Academy Bengkulu Malaysia. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study involved the manager and two teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data collection methods included observation, interviews, and documentation analysis. The scaffolding method was implemented in four stages: assistance provided by others, assistance provided by the self, internalization, and de-automatization. In the first stage, teachers utilized affective, analytical, and social scaffolding techniques. During the second stage, students practiced speaking independently, with teachers emphasizing confidence by overlooking minor errors. The third stage, internalization, involved "outdoor activities" monitored via WhatsApp to facilitate real-life speaking practice. However, the final stage, de-automatization, was not fully realized, as students remained reliant on teacher instructions and preferred their native language outside of practice sessions.

Abstract

The trend in deep learning in English language education has encouraged greater attention toward curriculum models that connect language learning with meaningful classroom interaction. Within this research, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Acquisition framework has gained attention for its learner-centred and inquiry-oriented approach to language education. This study aims to examine the potentials and challenges of IB Language Acquisition in improving English language learning. Using a systematic literature review design guided by PRISMA, the study selected ten peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025 from Scopus, ERIC, SAGE Journals, Google Scholar, and Semantic Scholar. Our findings show that IB Language Acquisition engage deeper learning by emphasising language as part of meaning-making, identity construction, inquiry, conceptual engagement, critical thinking, and multilingual interaction. The findings also indicate a shift from form-focused language learning toward sociocultural and epistemic perspectives where language functions as a medium for constructing understanding and participating in learning processes. However, the implementation of IB Language Acquisition remains shaped by contextual challenges, including procedural inquiry practices, unequal institutional readiness, assessment demands, and tensions surrounding multilingualism and academic English expectations.
