Abstract

Librarians contribute significantly to the efficient implementation of KM projects as custodians and disseminators of information within the organization. This research provides an overall picture of KM in private university libraries in Bangladesh. The primary aim of this study is to analyze the present status of KM practices in private university libraries in Bangladesh. Library professionals’ level of understanding of KM as well as the methods of recording knowledge in these libraries is also identified. This is a quantitative study. A structured survey questionnaire was distributed among the 11 private university library professionals of Bangladesh to collect primary data. The overall response rate was 89.1%. The collected data has been analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics Version 25 Software. The results revealed that there is no formal theoretical as well as practical application of KM in Bangladesh’s private university libraries. The library professionals’ understanding of KM is at a generally satisfactory level. The present study also suggests that the most frequently utilized methods to record tacit and explicit knowledge in these libraries are ‘Social interaction’ and ‘Journals’ respectively.

Abstract

Background of the study: Users of university libraries frequently have high expectations for the support services offered by the library. The goals of KM are to enhance library services, generate more with fewer resources, prevent duplication of effort, and take advantage of already existing knowledge. Purpose: The main aim of this research is to recognize the user awareness of Knowledge Management (KM) Practices of public university libraries in Bangladesh. Method: The present research used quantitative methods. A total of 1,060 printed questionnaires were distributed among undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students of five public university libraries in Bangladesh using a simple random sampling technique. Out of 1,060 questionnaires, 811 usable questionnaires were returned, giving a response of 76.5%. Findings: The study found that users' familiarity with KM is moderately low. They learned about KM through courses provided by their respective departments and independent study through research literature. It was also found that lack of awareness, problems with organizational culture, improper technology deployment, and inadequate support from management are the challenges related to KM practice in public university libraries in Bangladesh. Conclusion: Finally, the research presented managerial and practical implications with further research directions.

Abstract

There is an exclusive chance for university libraries to contribute to the future reimagining of library services. In this regard, the job of KM might be extremely successful. As a result, university libraries may provide excellent user services by utilizing KM. This research is to explore the existing models of Knowledge Management (KM) and how the existing models of KM are implemented at university libraries, to recognize how KM is being implemented at university libraries as reported in earlier research, and the benefits of KM practices for creating service value for libraries. This research was performed following the “Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA)” guidelines. The study found that a skilled workforce and expertise are required for effective KM implementation in university libraries. Outdated skills may serve as a starting point for KM in university libraries, but they are insufficient for providing service-based value. There is a need for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals to develop additional competencies for KM practice in university libraries. Based on the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that all the authors have recognized the importance of KM in libraries. This finding would aid the university libraries and offer current KM knowledge to other libraries. Therefore, this research would be an excellent addition to the application of KM in university libraries.

Abstract

Background of the study: The mission of libraries is to collect, organize, and make available various forms of information resources for potential users. Many libraries and historically significant institutions have rare and credible information resources that have little use because few people know they are available online. Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to ascertain the challenges and potential advantages associated with implementing Linked Data (LD) technology in libraries in Bangladesh. Method: A quantitative survey was conducted to collect data from the library professionals of some selected public university libraries in Bangladesh.. A total of 39 responded to the survey, which was usable among the 54 responses. The response rate was 72.2%. Once the quantitative data were collected, data were transferred into IBM®SPSS® statistics for analysis. Findings: The survey's results show that academic librarians are thoroughly aware of LD technology and believe they could have many advantages. Current research found that library professionals understand the challenges of adopting LD technologies in Bangladesh's libraries. Conclusion: This research is the first empirical investigation of the topic within the Bangladeshi setting that the authors are aware of. It shows how the information professionals in Bangladesh see the library LD and related initiatives and the possible advantages of putting it into action.

Abstract

Background of the study: Information has become a powerful element that shapes our thoughts, decisions, opinions and holistic approach towards life. The requirement for information ranges from personal and professional development to social survival Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to assess the information needs and information-seeking behavior of the users of a southern public university library in Bangladesh. Method: A quantitative approach was used to explain the information-seeking behavior of the student-users of the target library. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the users/students. A simple random sampling technique was used to reach the target population. The link to the questionnaire was sent to almost 350 students and finally, 205 responses were retrieved with a response rate of 58.5%. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Findings: The study discovered that students of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) mostly use the library for studying and internet access. Library books are the most popular resource. Obstacles to information access, including a scarcity of book copies, inexperience with the library catalog, and a perception of insufficient resources, were major barriers to seeking information. The present study revealed that gender did not have a major impact on the purposes of visiting the library. Significant differences were found between age groups, demonstrating that preferences change as students progress through their academic lives. Conclusion: The achieved findings are a new discovery for the students of the southern part of Bangladesh, as no previous studies have been published in this part of Bangladesh.
