Abstract

As an archipelagic nation, Indonesia holds substantial potential for wave energy as a renewable resource. Certain coastlines of islands facing the Indian Ocean, particularly in the western and southern regions, exhibit significant wave energy throughout the year. To identify suitable locations for Wave Energy Converter (WEC) installation, it is essential to assess wave hindcast data. This study utilizes NOAA and ERA5 reanalysis wave data to analyze wave characteristics in Indonesia from 2008 to 2018. Data processing with Ocean Data View is employed to estimate key wave parameters at various locations, including significant wave height, mean wave period, and mean wave direction. Two locations in the South Java seas were identified for WEC installation based on this research. The average values for the period 2008 to 2018 indicate a significant wave height of around 2m, with a maximum height of 5m, a wave period of 10–14s, and a wave direction of 195–210 degrees. Notably, NOAA data suggests a higher estimation of significant wave height compared to ERA5 data. The average annual wave power potential based on ERA5 and NOAA is 164.43 MW/m and 252.15 MW/m, respectively. Furthermore, this study incorporates an economic simulation for the construction of a multi-point absorber WEC. The objective is to offer insights into the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and compare it with other WEC technologies. Assuming a WEC capacity of 130 kW, the total construction cost is estimated at $2,093,725, resulting in a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of $91/MWh.

Abstract

Abstract¾Hydrodynamic resistance remains a key factor governing the performance of high-speed planing vessels, as it directly determines propulsion power requirements. Despite extensive studies on hydrofoil performance, the application of the NACA 6409 profile in planing hull vessels remains limited. In particular, its potential as a fixed hydrofoil configuration, which may reduce design complexity and enhance practical implementation, has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of hydrofoil angle of attack on resistance reduction and lift generation in a small planing hull vessel. Numerical simulations were conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in ANSYS Fluent with the SST k–ω turbulence model. Angles of attack of 0°, 5°, 10°, and 15° were analyzed at operating speeds of 15 and 20 knots under foilborne conditions. The results show that low angles of attack, particularly 0° and 5°, provide the greatest resistance reduction, achieving up to 63.3% lower total resistance compared to the non-hydrofoil configuration at 20 knots. In contrast, higher angles of attack (≥10°) increase resistance due to induced drag and flow separation. The hydrofoil configuration also reduces propulsion power requirements and enables foilborne operation at speeds above 15 knots with a minimum angle of attack of 5°. These findings identify the optimal operating range of the NACA 6409 hydrofoil and provide practical design guidance for improving the efficiency of hydrofoil-assisted planing vessels.

Abstract

Operating room ventilation plays an important role in controlling bacteria-carrying particles (BCP), reducing infection risk, and maintaining thermal comfort for medical staff. Temperature-controlled airflow (TAF) is a promising ventilation strategy because it supplies air through central and peripheral inlets with different temperatures to form a stable downward airflow. This study aims to optimize a TAF ventilation system by considering BCP concentration, energy consumption, and predicted mean vote (PMV). A three-dimensional operating room model was developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Four operating parameters were varied using central composite design (CCD), while the peripheral inlet position was evaluated separately as a two-level geometry parameter. Airflow was solved using the RNG k–ε turbulence model, while BCP motion was modeled using the discrete phase model (DPM). CFD simulation results were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) model, which was then integrated with a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). TOPSIS was used to select the best compromise solution from the Pareto front. The optimum condition was obtained at a central inlet velocity of 0.2735 m/s, peripheral inlet velocity of 0.1671 m/s, central inlet temperature of 21.8649 °C, peripheral inlet temperature of 22.0127 °C, and peripheral-to-central inlet distance of 2.0474 m. This configuration produced a BCP concentration of 0.9115 CFU/m³, energy consumption of 9.8832 kW, and PMV of −0.3186. These results indicate that the modified TAF configuration can produce low particle concentration, relatively low energy consumption, and acceptable thermal comfort in the operating room.
