Abstract

Kedungsepur, situated in Central Java Province, Indonesia, encompasses the regions of Kendal, Demak, Ungaran, Semarang, Salatiga, and Purwodadi, making it a strategically significant area. Its designation as a metropolitan area was established by Presidential Decree Number 78 of 2017, with one of its primary objectives being to promote equity by reducing urban primacy. This study seeks to assess the metropolitanization of Kedungsepur from 2016 to 2020, focusing on two key indicators: polycentricity and spatial transformation. Polycentricity is evaluated based on concentration, accessibility, and connectivity, while spatial transformation is measured by analyzing the percentage of built-up land and urban level. Polycentricity is assessed using secondary data from BPS-Statistics Indonesia, while the percentage of built-up land and urban level is determined through the interpretation of Sentinel 2A satellite imagery from 2016 and 2020. The findings indicate a moderate improvement in polycentricity during the 2016—2020 period, with partial spatial transformation occurring, particularly along highway corridors between cities. In conclusion, metropolitanization demonstrates positive progress toward its objectives, albeit requiring more balanced control over spatial transformation processes.

Abstract

This study identifies the dynamics of residential land use development in Ngemplak District, Sleman Regency, as a new residential growth center strategically located close to the access road leading to Yogyakarta City between 2014 and 2024. The rapid population growth has driven the increased demand for housing, resulting in significant changes in land use. The study employed spatial analysis methods using overlay techniques, with data obtained through image interpretation. The results show that the residential area expanded from 361,71 hectares (9,90% of the total area) in 2014 to 442,19 hectares (12,10%) in 2024. This development was accompanied by a reduction in the number of residential blocks, indicating the consolidation of larger and more integrated residential areas. The distribution pattern of settlements remains clustered, with expansion following existing residential areas. Land conversion from non-residential areas, such as rice fields, drylands, and yards, also occurred. However, the average residential area per household still meets the minimum space requirements. These findings can serve as a reference in spatial planning and more sustainable environmental management. Based on the findings, the study recommends the establishment of land conversion control zones to protect agricultural land and green open spaces, preventing negative impacts on food security and ecology. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi dinamika perkembangan penggunaan lahan permukiman di Kecamatan Ngemplak, Kabupaten Sleman, sebagai wilayah pusat pertumbuhan permukiman baru yang lokasinya strategis karena berada dekat dengan akses menuju Kota Yogyakarta antara tahun 2014 dan 2024. Pertumbuhan penduduk yang pesat mendorong peningkatan kebutuhan hunian, menyebabkan perubahan signifikan pada penggunaan lahan. Penelitian menggunakan metode analisis spasial dengan teknik overlay, dimana datanya diperoleh melalui interpretasi citra. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa luas permukiman meningkat dari 361,71 hektar (9,90%) dari total wilayah) pada 2014 menjadi 442,19 hektar (12,10%) pada 2024. Perkembangan ini disertai dengan pengurangan jumlah blok permukiman, menunjukkan penggabungan kawasan permukiman yang lebih besar dan terkonsolidasi. Pola persebaran permukiman tetap mengelompok, dengan pertambahan yang mengikuti area permukiman eksisting. Konversi lahan non-permukiman, seperti sawah, tegalan, dan pekarangan, juga terjadi. Meskipun demikian, luas hunian per rumah tangga masih memenuhi standar minimum kebutuhan ruang. Temuan ini dapat menjadi acuan dalam perencanaan tata ruang dan pengelolaan lingkungan yang lebih berkelanjutan. Rekomendasi dari hasil penelitian ini adalah perlunya dilakukan penetapan zona pengendalian konversi lahan untuk menjaga lahan pertanian dan ruang terbuka hijau agar mencegah dampak negatif pada ketahanan pangan dan ekologi.
