Abstract

Throughout history, the Quran underwent physical transformations that reflected the development of society and technology. The book "Qurans: Books of Divine Encounter" by Keith E. Small presents a visual history of the Quran through 55 rare manuscripts from parchment to paper in the Bodlein collection from around the world. These manuscripts were acquired through purchase, but also existed as inheritances, adventurers, scholars, diplomats, clerics, and from royalty. This book is not just a collection of images but a visual guide that reveals the evolution of Quranic writing over time. This study is a revisiting of the book, focusing on the development of Quranic materials from parchment to paper. The research method begins by analyzing the literature and works of Keith E. Small. There are two findings from this paper. First, this book is Keith E Small's attempt to move away from outsider studies that were initially confined to the ontological and epistemological study of the Qur'?n towards a future historical stream, namely the relationship between Qur'?nic visualization and the status of the authenticity of Qur'?nic revelation as seen in the stability of Qur'?nic copies and the preservation of the divine kalam. Secondly, the book highlights the central role of the Qur'?n as an integral pillar in Islamic history, art and culture, as well as the importance of the scripture in shaping Muslim identity and the course of civilization.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the Quran's resistance to economic oligarchy by referencing the interpretations of Surah Al-Humazah and Al-Hashr: 7. Employing the tafsir Nuzuli approach from the perspective of Muhammad Abid al-Jabiri, the article delves into two main issues: Firstly, the review of the tafsir Nuzuli concerning economic principles in Surah Al-Humazah and al-Hashr verse 7. Secondly, the correlation between these verses and their contextualization in relation to economic oligarchy. The study adopts a literature review using a descriptive-analytical method. Based on an analysis of interpretation aspects, sabab nuzul, and the historical context of pre-Islamic Arabia, the study concludes that the verses articulate the Quran's opposition to economic oligarchy. The interpretation of Surah Al-Humazah condemns the propaganda of economic oligarchy perpetrators, specifically a group of pagan Quraisy elites. The interpretation of al-Hashr verse 7 reveals the wealth distribution policy implemented during the Prophet's leadership in Medina based on maslahah, ensuring the avoidance of concentrating wealth exclusively among a select few affluent individuals. The sabab nuzul of these verses, associated with the conditions of pre-Islamic Arabia, elucidates the Quranic vision of economic justice, allowing for its contextualization in the present era.

Abstract

This article provides a review of 'Adalah al-Shahabah Kepada Rekonstruksi Definisi Sahabat: Kajian Kritis Mengenai Sahabat dalam Tinjauan Nas by Muhammad Tahir Alibe. In the article, Tahir presents two main points: a redefinition of the term "companions" and a rejection of the "all companions are fair" rule in hadith sanad criticism. The review in this article focuses on three key issues: Firstly, the negative portrayal of the history of the Companions. Secondly, the analysis of arguments supporting and opposing the fairness of the Companions. Thirdly, a critical assessment of the redefined term "companions." To accomplish these objectives, this article employs a comparative literature-based research approach. The findings of this review reveal: Firstly, the historical narrative of the Companions in Tahir's article demonstrates bias. Secondly, the mapping of pro and con arguments lacks balance. Thirdly, the proposal to redefine the term "sahabat" requires further examination. Ketiga, tawaran pendefinisian ulang istilah sahabat perlu ditinjau ulang.
